An updated Spike from the mlp show. It kinda always erked me that Spike never really grew throughout the show. I almost thought that his fate was to actually stay in an infantile body bc Spike lived with ponies and as a result could never get enough nutrition. But then suddenly at the end of the show after years and years of Spike not growing he suddenly appears in the last episodes as a hulking, oddly-humanoid proportioned Spike. Like a bug he seems to have metamorphizized into a teen dragon.

The whole timeline seems off so here my headcannon.

Spike continuously grows throughout the show though it is at a slower pace then most regular dragons. However, its not because Spike hasn't received enough "nutrition" as most wild dragons. Spike has received more then enough subsistence (and maybe one to many cakes) and has grown at a slow linear pace.

The problem most ponies don't understand is that sudden Dragon growth isnot motivated by metamorphism but by survival . Most young dragons are cared by their parents for a couple years before their quickly abandoned and left to fend for their own. As a result dragons over the millennium have developed a genetic resource to counteract their vulnerable small state. By growing enormously larger then their enemy. When faced with an enemy baby dragons secret a special concoction from their glands, that many pony scholars haven't put a name to yet, that causes the baby dragon to rapidly grow in front of the their enemies eyes. And a large adrenaline shot to fight off their enemy. The enemy (usually a large animal) quickly gets the message and runs off for other prey. The adrenaline wears off though and the baby dragon, now "grown", falls into a deep slumber because its body cant handle such a rapid growth in the bones.

That's why in the episodes "Dragon Quest" even though Spike clearly looks to young to hang out with the other dragons they are actually the same age.

Spike the dragon has never faced a "large raging enemy" so as a result his body has grown at a regular pace. And even when he has faced with an enemy Spikes brain is equipped to handle this foe without panicking terribly. It is know after all that after Dragons reach a certain height, and they don't have many enemies, they then grow slowly into their large behemoth bodies.

So here's teen spike representing season 6 onward.

A lovable geek, who likes to read comic books (is well-read in general), play Ogre and Obliettes, read comic books, be Twilight's right-hand assistant and bake sweets like theirs no tomorrow. Bottom line hes a sweet chunky boi who wouldn't hesitate to his put his life on the line to defend his friends.
