An arranged (Political) marriage between princess twilight and the former king sombra.
Technically just a way to keep tabs on the vengeful, cruel and power obsessed umbrum unicorn.

I believe that sombra is not inherently evil or cruel, I know it seems weird to believe but just think about how his story goes.

Picture this;
a young child transformed and casted into a different society all because your species wants to have revenge and be free but upon being thrown into the new world you forget your task and live the life as something you are not. All throughout your life you hear the voices of your forgotten past. Not knowing what to do you turn to the one person, the one pony whom everyone says could help you- Queen amore. But even when pleading for help from the queen she turns her back to you and forbids you from telling anyone else of what you hear or what you see or believe. Frustrated you fall into the darkness of your mind, and for a time you start to wonder- who is calling you? What is calling you? What does it want? But before you could get to far into your mind you find yourself distracted by love and hope. A young gal whom you wish to stay by your side for she helps put you at ease but only for a little bit...As time grows on you discover the fact that you have become dependent on your love interest and that disturbs you, to the point of where you break off from the one you love. But doing so you cause unnecessary pain to her and yourself which breaks you down and as such you start to hear those voices, the ones you’ve been ignoring for so long. They’ve come back and they are louder than ever, trapped in despair you find yourself listening and doing everything the voices ask you believing if you do everything will be fine. But it’s not, it never could be. After years of doing what the voices ask, you’ve slowly been placed under a spell, a spell that causes you to forget about the one you love, to forget about the good ponies whom love to have you around, you forget that you are currently about to destroy everything you currently know and care about because your destroyed yourself. One the day your final task has been set, your run into the queen and your former love. Both of who still believe that you can change. But you can’t...or rather you aren’t allowed to. After being under the curse/spell of your ancestors for so long you can’t understand what or why things are going as such and believe there is nothing they can do to help you. Because of that you imprison many, kill the queen and force the mare you so truly loved so long ago to be your wife for all of your lives. When she leaves you, you feel hurt and broken and confused as you thought if you did everything the voices asked of you everything would be fine...if only you had realized sooner that everything you did would cause a whole lot of pain and not just to others but to yourself. Now with nothing and no one you stand alone and hurt, soon confronting the voices only to get no answers and more questions.

I would also take into note that twilight would not likely have the slightest thought of marrying him. I think it would take her a lot of time to even consider marriage with literally anyone but as this marriage is purely just to keep a stronger and closer eye on sombra I doubt she would go against it too much. After all, you dount want him running around planning things and stuff, right?

Side note: I think its commonly known that "king" may not be sombra's true name. If I were to think of anything else I'd probably say he was named somber heart or something similar and as a foal he was given the nickname king. Probably because he loved playing a game in which you could be named king.

More on this marriage, Of course twilight and friends are against the entire thing. It's sombra! Who in the hay would marry him? Let alone like him? And who even suggested the idea of marriage???? Well turns out it was the mad stallion himself...weird. He suggested the whole thing knowing that the "royal princesses" would want to keep an eye on him and "try" to rehabilitate him. As suspected there is a different motive but it wasn't as sinister as it would seem to be. Sombra knew very well that he would not be wed to anyone commoner and would most likely be wed to one of the elements or princess, his mind couldn't matter who less. As knowing such he needed to decide his steps carefully as not to fall behind on what the voices had told him to do. But he never expected that a volunteer would come along, much less the volunteer being twilight sparkle. Curse that blasted mare! Always in the way, always doing something!. Sombra didn't entertain the idea of marrying her but saw some value in marry someone which such high power and talent for the concept of magic its self. But of course not everyone agreed with the arrangement and he got plenty of "warnings" from not just her friends but many others including the wimpy dragon known as spike. Tired of all the chaos, he was glad when the wedding was over and he could go back to his home or so he thought. Twilight suggested that they should live in her castle or in canterlot, mainly so that they could have much easier access to supplies, with a tired groan the stallion replied with the fact that if she wanted to have any sort of access to her "freinds" she shouldn't have volunteered and stayed silent. Twilight sighed and with a saf face she started to turn around and walk away, sombra growling and knowing he would hear the end of it and how he made her said, used his magic to grab her and start heading towards the everfree forest. Confused and panicked twilight order or tried to order sombra to tell her what was he doing. His reply was simple "Going home".
