The play they represent in the episode is "Ribbon no Kishi". The protagonist of that story, Sapphire, is a princess who must be raised as a child to fulfill the will of her people. It's not a boy, it's a girl. Although the scene in which they look "in love" is a reference of the anime "Kakumei Utena", and, interestingly, they're still two girls.
