Description #151 Mew / Myuu (ミュウ) The New Species Pokemon
"A POKéMON of South America that was thought to have been extinct. It is very intelligent and learns any move."

Critique is most welcome! Please, be harsh.
Just playing around with a new sort of technique I learned in art class with charcoals. Obviously not as messy as actual charcoal, but it still has that sort of incomplete charm, I suppose. Added a faint layer of colour just to add some more interest. A quick drawing for #PokemonMuseum 's Creature Feature. Sort of like an example, but hey, I just wanted to practice.

3 colours used. 2-3 layers. Approximately 45min.
Using Pixelmator [v2.0.5 Chameleon] and Wacom Intuos4

Brilliant work with charcoal and chalk pastel. The addition of the colors add a really nice contrast to the shadow and gives it a more natural feel. You did a nice job creating so many different shades using only the three colors for your palette. The elements tie together very nicely and gives an air of mystery befitting the Mystery pokemon.

The only thing that really bothers me are the squiggles of white on the rocks. They're not blended in as well, and draw the viewer's attention away from the focus. They could be blended and darkened more to give it a more watery look.

Thank you so much for the critique! I really appreciate it.

As I said in the artists' comment, it was just a quick little drawing to get a simple idea down -- by no means was I trying to be perfect. In fact, what you call rocks is what I aimed to be looked at as foliage, so already I can tell that I've failed somewhat. The lighting, I believe, was meant to be more stark in contrast, but I also failed in that aspect by not putting more shadow behind the Mew.

I do agree that the white is a bit distracting, however. The mew should be the attention grabber, not the foliage surrounding it. I think it was meant to appear more as a soft glow -- still contrasting, but without a sharp edge, I suppose.

Also I feel the need to correct -- this was by no means drawn with chalk and charcoal. This particular piece is purely digital and done with a particular type of brush. This original "charcoal" drawing was done on one layer and then duplicated twice to play around with the contrast. I do think it is a bit much at times, but at least I was experimenting.

But yes, I really am glad that you critiqued! I can't ever get enough of those.
The harsher the better.

Oh... Well it sure looked convincing enough. Digital artwork never ceases to surprise me. Everytime I look there seems to be a new trick you can do.

I thought it was supposed to be Mew coming across a little forgotten stream in the rainforest. But looking at it again I can see the denser foliage.

Not bad for an experiment though.

No, please don't get me wrong, I take it as a huge compliment that my digital work sometimes comes off as traditional! It's hard to get one to look like the other.

I think my thought process was, "Mew... legendary, basically thought to be extinct... lives in South America... dense jungle-type setting... alone."

But thank you, once again! I was rather happy with how my little test turned out. ;u;
