Recently I was doing some group work for a project, and this particular group work required us to make a visual representation of the group. Being the only person in the group who was artistically inclined, I was elected by the group to create the group avatars.

This turned out to be a hellish undertaking.

I was working on my little group of avatars next to this one girl from my group, who kept making changes to hers and claimed that it looked nothing like her. eloquent as I am, I tried to convince her that it wasn’t really supposed to be photo-realistic, just a representation of her, but she was not having it. I must have done twice the amount of revisions on her avatar, than on any one else.

I believe that it was the fact that we were working next to one another that was my downfall, she seemed always to have one eye on my screen and one on her own.

This little experience taught me 2 things:

1. never draw a portrait of a bitch, she will not like it (this is actually a small lesson that I seem to learn over and over)

2. When drawing, either do it in company of people who are drawing as well, or alone. The act of drawing seems to have a strange allure that makes any bystander want to watch and comment.
