HISTORY
Childhood
Raphael and Ariston of House Rex have not only established a law firm, but also a name for themselves over their years in Valore. They wear their surname with pride and as such, bestowed the responsibility of carrying it further to their three children as well. Luca is the oldest and certainly the most spoiled, raised with a golden spoon in her mouth and on her dinner table. Lexley came soon after her, and the pair were quick to adapt to their rich lifestyle and fit perfectly into their parent's mold of an heir for their law firm.
But Raphael and Ariston's marriage was not one of love, and their decision to bear kids had more to do with societal pressure for an heir than the desire to raise an infant - but when Luca and Lexley left the house, their large villa suddenly felt strangely empty. After years of simply tolerating each other's presence at social events and distancing from each other at home, the two grew closer and felt another kid, ten years after their first, would help them re-establish their arranged marriage into one of love. Louie was brought into the world shortly after.
Born in the shadows of his two already successful siblings and overbearing parents, the small buckskin was raised shy and wary, but with curious eyes. At the time, his parents didn't think much of the way he hid between their legs when meeting strangers or ducked his head when talked to, but the older Louie grew, the more apparent the difference between him and his older siblings got. Where Luca would stay inside for a spa day, Louie spent the day out in the gardens, helping the young slaves rearrange flowers - where Lexley would be in the library studying law, Louie mingled with the commoners at the market. It came to no one's surprise that Louie felt he wasn't fit to follow his siblings' footprints and study business as well.
His parents, at a loss for what to do, left him to his own devices for a couple of years. The private teacher they hired got sent home after two days and Louie signed himself up for cooking classes in one of the public schools instead - their garden grew full with rainbow-colored flowers and their slaves were allowed to rest at midday for longer than usual.
Adolescence
When Louie turned twenty, Raphael lost his cool. It might have been a mix of bad days at the firm and arguments with Ariston, but seeing Louie play with his commoner friends just outside the mansion made all hell break loose. The very one-sided argument kept going for several days and the jabs at Lou's soft personality and a new rule on no friends near or inside the mansion made Louie withdraw into his room more often than not, terrified of doing what he thought were the right things. Ariston was the one to try and fix things and came up with an arguably logical solution - let Louie roam free among the commoners until he realized that this supposed low life was not for him. They were nice enough to rent him a small apartment above a spa and promptly cut off all contact save for a few phone calls a month.
Louie felt lost. He spent his days among the marketplace and trying to find a job that'd ensure him more income than just barely getting by, and his sudden lack of money brought him to sell most valuables he'd taken along to his new home. This new situation and extremely minimalistic lifestyle should have made him go back to the villa full of food and warm clothes, but instead, it made Louie more eager to help. He grew warm and friendly to every single soul he came across because he did not know what they were going through - it was rare he was met with the same attitude, but he was steady in his doings. After hanging around the same few spots in the city and frequently getting ran over and snapped at by stressed merchants, he was confronted by a small donkey mare named Phillipa. Oddly, she found something in need of protection in Louie, and soon enough, the two turned into an inseparable pair - Pippa was loud where Louie kept quiet, and Louie was warm where Pippa struggled with affection. Looking back, Louie admits that meeting Pippa must have been fated, because her constant presence by his side was his only motivator for years.
Louie and Pippa did have one thing in common, and that was their hobbies; where Louie enjoyed creating new beverages and trying out new combinations of tea or coffee, Pippa weirdly enough enjoyed baking to the point of bringing new pastries home to Louie each day. When the spa under Lou's apartment moved buildings and the space became free to rent, the two took on more jobs than possible to afford rent and renovation. A year after, when Louie turned 22, the café "Butter Beans" opened.
His parents were not happy with this new revelation - that their son was now earning money independently and had completely removed himself from their noble life - and called him again and again, but each time, Phillipa slammed the phone down and worried their persuasive words would convince Louie to go back and leave her and his café behind.
Butter Beans steadily grew more famous for it's warm and safe atmosphere, but Louie and Pippa knew better than not to stay humble. Some rougher months, where customer lines grew thinner and their money got low, had Louie desperately considering contacting his parents, taking up his noble house again, helping Pippa and the café with his parent's money, but something inside him told him that it wasn't time yet - that he was better off waiting.
So he did, until with 23, a regular customer of Butter Beans grew more and more obvious to Lou. His name was Wesley and he was noble - a distant relative to house Kalama, Louie knew, had heard of his name before. Although he was hesitant to contact this side of Aodh again, he grew to appreciate Wesley for more than just his appearance, and the two started dating; Louie just hoped his parents wouldn't find out too soon.
In Game
Chapter One (did not participate): With the new years leading to year 1700, Lou had hoped for a calm first few months - that dream was quickly ruined by the news that the Crubicle and the Dark District had both been attacked by a group that called themselves Vindicators. Both Louie and Wesley hadn't been anywhere near the attack, but especially Louie had a hard time wrapping his head around these happenings. He'd never been a fan of the extreme classism in Valore, and this new, supposedly terrorist group made him question his feelings towards slavery for the first time in years. Before, he'd never considered that slaves might hate their job - as a kid, he never would've thought, and as an adult, he simply never came across a lot. He tried to voice these feelings to his boyfriend but had a hard time believing no one would look at him wrong with these newly formed opinions.
Chapter Two (did not participate): Louie's birthday passes in a blur and soon, the flowers start poking through the snow and the grey filter on Aodh makes way for the bright sun again. With spring also comes a supposed Kirin, revealed by Lilith as her child - Lou dares not to question those circumstances and simply hopes that the return of the Kirins meant well. He tries praying more in the wake of the new Kirin princess, hoping Ignacio might hear and have good intentions, but doesn't exactly pull through on this promise and instead keeps himself busy with the café. When the situation with Serora grows tense, he starts worrying about Aodh's relations to the other herds in Hireath for the first time and searches for information in several libraries and Sanctums. Before, he'd never thought to bother with this, believing Aodh and Valore to be all he needed to know to survive, but the fear of war and death overpowered his small-minded ideals.
Adding to this, his family starts contacting him more frequently again - it starts with his sisters and ends with his fathers asking to meet up and meet his boyfriend. He's hesitant to agree, but Wesley gently pushes him to reconnect and the meeting goes arguably well; Louie doesn't know how he feels about being accepted as part of the family again, mostly because the trauma of his fathers abandoning him in that crammed apartment above the old spa is still fresh on his mind.
Chapter Three (did not participate): As more Kirins appear in Aodh, Louie grows more agitated, jumping between being worried about the God's intentions, the growing conflict with the herd in Sedo and being in regular contact with his fathers again, who weirdly enough say that they miss him and have learned to accept his humbleness for who he is. A dinner with them simmers old arguments, but Louie knows better than to start them up again and simply relishes in being around his sisters again, who he truly missed. His relationship with Wesley grows closer, and although they both know they're rushing it, Wesley makes enough hints for Louie to know what's to come.
Chapter Four (did not participate): Louie and Wesley get married in the autumn of 1700. It's an uncomfortably big event and Wesley apologizes about ninety times for it, knowing how Louie feels around large crowds, but the two enjoy it nonetheless. His family starts addressing him with Rex again.
About a month after their marriage, they receive the news that King Amadeus was assassinated in his sleep. Louie mourns longer than Wesley (or anyone else, it felt like), but feels hopeful in the wake of Isador's crowning. The old wyvern underneath the Pearl wakes up from her deep slumber and her antics destroy a part of Louie's café too, the street-nearest wall completely shattered. He closes it for about a month, draws back into his chambers and falls into old coping mechanisms until Wesley surprises him with a repaired wall and shiny new door. Business picks up slowly, but surely, and soon enough, the smile on his face reaches his eyes again.
He trusts Isador in the wake of a war with Serora more than he trusted Amadeus and relies on the King to make sure his citizens get away from it unharmed.
Chapter Five (did not participate): Winter passes by without as much as a hitch. Wesley takes Louie to a museum for his birthday and the café runs smoothly until Wesley offers Louie a one-week vacation to rest his soul. Louie takes the offer gladly and relishes the calm before the storm.
Chapter Six (did not participate): The storm ends up being a fire in the city of Ashlar. He's not largely affected by it, but is terrified of the Kirins' goals and ideals, and - figuratively - prays that Ignacio knows what is coming and will spare them. With the majority of labor slaves escaped, Louie's view on Aodhian culture is questioned again, and he does not buy any of the slaves he knows back from the government, although he knows he'd have the money to and Wesley offers.
With the Heralds of Ash rising literally from the Ashes, Louie isn't sure where the future of Aodh is headed and clings tightly to his café and husband, the only constants he seems to have in his life anymore.
TRIVIA
Political Thoughts:
- Lou generally tries to remain tight-lipped about politics at social events as not to anger anyone and only opens up to close friends if questioned. He has his doubts about the materialism and classism that exists in Valore, but feels helpless and hypocritical, especially regarding his own high status in Aodh. Feels like he should be ashamed of where he comes from, but also feels disrespectful "stepping down" to rub shoulders with Commoners
- Disliked Amadeus, mostly because he thinks it was Amadeus' own choice to become King instead of appointing one of his Advisers. Feels like he should have been prepared and berated better, but also mourned his death, for no kid deserves murder. Sees Isador as a better-fit King and more deserving of respect
- Used to turn a blind eye to the problems that come with slavery and might have considered getting one himself to help out in the café or villa, but has since changed his outlook on it to a more negative one with recent Vindicator attacks. Does not speak of this except to ones he knows are likeminded in fear of reactions
- Thinks the Serorans might have been well-intentioned in morale for balking on their deal with Aodh, but not well prepared for the consequences that would come with it and associates the entire herd with rash and impulsive decisions because of this. Thanks the War-Forged for their help, but sees them as war-ready brutes for the area they live in and how readily they stepped into battle
- He is very scared of Kirins and their recent appearings and actions. Rationally, he knows they should be honored and revered in Aodhian society, but can't help but fear their ideals and goals, and has talked about fleeing Aodh if they take their actions to the extreme to his husband
- Takes Aodh's broad acceptance of gender fluidity and sexuality for granted due to being raised by two gay fathers. Identifies as male, but is not scared to act traditionally "feminine". Accepts any and all identities without a problem
- The relationship with the other eminents of his house is a very distant one, mostly due to his own disinterest. The rare times he has to attend official outings and parties, he usually flocks to Wesley instead of his own fathers or his cousin and heir to the house, Regulus
- He has visited the famous Rex' Mausoleum a handful of times, once even with Wesley, but does not expect a spot in it because of his small role in the house's doing. His parents aren't very interested in the arts themselves and mostly focus on the Rex' ties and trades with Onea
Religious Thoughts:
- Was raised extremely devoted to Ignacio, but has since been slacking prayer- and devotion-wise. He was never taught about any other Gods, but is mildly interested in Kaia and Cascade from what he has seen in Sanctums
- He usually finds himself too busy to delve further into religion and thus gets even more panicked when it is brought up to be the cause of certain situations. When things are said to be fated by Ignacio, he feels guilty for not showing the God enough appreciation, but quickly forgets about this worry in the next second
- Is amazed by individuals with blessings, specifically ones blessed by Ignacio, but would never see himself gaining one for he associates most of them with battle and sees them as weapons
Butter Beans:
Butter Beans is a small hole-in-the-wall coffee shop surrounded by brick walls that Louie's owned for about three years. It has a rustic and wooden, but modern look to it, and the door jingles with every customer. The walls are lined with realistic paintings with warm palettes, adding to the café's cozy look, and there's always soft ambient music playing in the background, accompanied by strings or piano. The walls are lined by diner-inspired booths, but there's also round tables to stand at outside and some of the shelves in the corner are filled with books you can take out to read while drinking. Louie does not only sell coffee at his shop, but also tea, smoothies, customized beverages, and iced drinks. His co-owner and best friend Phillipa sells her baked goods inside the shop as well, including cake, cookies, and muffins. Louie sometimes stays in the small apartment above the café that is easily reachable by a staircase in the shop's kitchen.
Some of the most popular beverages include the Honey Hug Mug, which is calming apple cinnamon tea mixed with honey, the Valore Volcano, a strong black coffee topped with red dyed whipped cream served in a dragon mug, and the Love In A Cup. If you enter the coffee shop and ask for a Love In A Cup, Louie will create a customized beverage for you, ranging from fruity smoothies to iced coffees. He tries to judge your taste from what's popular and what he likes, and he usually never gets it wrong.
Other beverages include the Skeldr Scoop, dark chocolate with vanilla ice cream, the Sirith's Stars, a purple-colored frappuccino with edible sparkles, the Sedo Sweetness, red iced Seroran tea served in a cup that reminds one of cacti, and the Inaria Icer, a light blue raspberry smoothie.
