Description A slight redesign of the Crocodile Cowl I made not too long ago from Bonita Patterns. As you can see, this one covers the shoulders, and was shortened in the hood and neck section so it drapes nicely without bunching.  I also worked the hood the same way I do my hooded scarves and just added the scales afterwards, rather than following the directions in the pattern. This way the hood looks as if it was crocheted as one piece with the shrug.
I made this one to fit me specifically, but it's easily adjustable to fit any size.
Oh, and this is made from Bernat Premium yarn - it took roughly a skein and a half, maybe a bit more, for those who are interested

Since the new one actually fits me, the original Crocodile Cowl is up for immediate sale, as well as commission. This style is up for commission as well - as always, just send me a note if you'd like your own

Thank you! Not gonna lie, it's still one of my favourite designs, even if it does use a metric ton of yarn!

You're welcome!
LOL whoa, a metric ton? That's one heavy cowl...
I went to check out the original pattern and wow! I think your version is far superior. By any chance do you still have the pattern for your version?

Pfft, what can I say, fashion is a heavy burden to bear

Hmm, for my version I just modified the Bonita pattern on the fly. I thought I had left notes on the PDF, but if I did I didn't save them apparently :/ But I can tell you the basics of what I changed, which is really all you need to work to your measurements anyways - mine would probably just bugger you up rather than help

Ok, so first I took a loose measurement around my shoulders/upper arms, and made a chain approximately to that length that would give me an even number of V-stitches (if you fudge up your counting it's no biggie to just leave some extra stitches from the chain dangling, since the scales will cover it).

After that I just worked up however many scale rows I thought looked nice, which in this cowl's case was 5. After that I worked dc in the BLO (for both stretch and texture). I think I worked straight for a few rows to reach the tops of my shoulders, then started decreasing every row, similar to how you would for clothing on an amigurumi. Once I got to a width that felt comfortable, I worked a few rows up to shape around the neck, then bound off.
The hood I made Moogly style. I think I made it a little short (width ways, not height) and then just worked the Bonita scales along the front, same as if I had done the hood as they instructed. That way I got the scales facing the way I wanted, but with a shaped and seamless hood.

That's all I've got, other than some basic tips, like don't worry if it looks skrinkly while your working on it; blocking is suuuper important for this project, and I can gurantee it looks and feels 1000% better after that. Oh, and if you want a button up version rather than pull-over, the V-stitches make very convenient button holes, if I recall correctly. Zipper probably wouldn't be half bad either, since the scales would make it pretty subtle.

Anyways, hopefully that all makes sense? It's been a little while since I've made one of these

LOL Yep, it hurts to be beautiful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me all those tips! I really appreciate it. I think I have a fair grasp, but if I mess up, I'm not afraid to frog the hell out of a project
I have a huge WIP pile, so I have no idea when I'll get to it but this cowl is definitely going on the 'to do' list

No worries, it was a good little refresher! Kinda makes me happy to realize I can trace my steps on a project now, even without notes - it's not something I could manage before. If you have any questions once this project gets going (even if it's months or years from now, I'll be around ), feel free to drop me a line!
And boy do I feel you on the infinite WIPs, let alone the idea and to-do list pile

You are so sweet! I'll definitely take you up on that! Given the state of my WIP pile, probably closer to years from now hahaha but I really do hope to get to it soon. It looks so comfy for cold weather wear.
Oh man, I didn't even count the idea list the other day I told my husband I had so many ideas I'd probably wind up crocheting in my coffin.  His instant reply was, "Ok, we'll rig you up a pulley system."

Thanks love I think I actually still have that one too, now that I think about it - I made it for the purpose of attempting to alter the original pattern, rather than for commission. I'm moving to a smaller pace, so I really should go through my stuff and see what I can sell/trade to make some room (ah the joys of moving! )

Commissions are always open And I probably wouldn't mind parting with this one either, if the recipient had similar measurements.
