Considering the question about Rinoa, your friends may be partially right. I noticed there was a definite vibe of South America in certain aspects of Final Fantasy VIII, especially Galbadia and Deling City, which mirrors the setup of Argentina back in the fifties. It's obvious that Square had been inspired by the Madonna movie "Evita," and that shows through the exotic dress of Sorceress Edea. As for the ethnicity, it's definitely South American: Spanish, Indian, and Portuguese blood and features. The way you described your hair, for example, with slightly gray highlights, is reminiscent of Rinoa's auburn highlighted bangs. Now, Japanese Anime is always assumed to use exclusively Japanese features in characters' faces, but that's open to debate--Rinoa seems fairly Portugugese.
Hence, your friends have a great deal of weight. While you're not quite Rinoa (your smile is much wider), there's enough to conclude that Square had its sights on South America while constructing that game.
