Iolanthe was born as the second child of a very devout and intelligent traditional blackwood pair who lays a heavy focus on magic and magic teachings. At that point, they had only one child. Their eldest, Yennefer was the picture of blackwood beauty and from a young age proved to have her ambitions and wits about her.

Then came Iolanthe.

The thing was pale as the moon and trembled on her twiggy legs. If she had been born a stag, they would have put the fawn out of its misery on the spot. However, since they would not disrespect the mother like that they dutifully moved their home further away from the main herd and did their best to keep the filly alive and out of harm's way. However, Blackwood is dense with murderous intent and the pale little girl was like a beacon. Her parents, therefore, struggled with relocations, restlessness, sleepless nights, and many relocations. While already placing a heavy emphasis on magic teachings over physical training, seeing the lithe build of Io they decided to start magic practice as soon as possible.

Hearing about a pair who already had pale fawns in their care, Iolanthe's parents approached Rukaban and Eidolon very soon after she was born. They figured that it would be wiser to place Iolanthe in their protection and care for the majority of her fawnhood, and visit the filly for teachings and so that she may know her parents. They had to protect their other children though and did not see the sense in pulling the attention of predators in multiple places.

Whilst the relationship between their father, Vengerburg, and her sister Yennefer had always been strained, Iolanthe often found herself incurring her mother's wrath instead. Where she was kind and nurturing for Yennefer in the times where she needed it, Aretuza treats Iolanthe with steely and dogmatic boundaries and discipline.
