What time of day do you usually take your photo's?

I usually try to get to the location before sunrise, after that depending of the weather you have a couple of hours to find and take photos of insects while they are still drowsy.

Are they that drowsy that they don't notice you?

They do notice you, however, due to the low body temperature they can't really escape... I use a Nikon D90 and several lenses depending of the effect I want to achieve: Zeiss Luminar 63mm (this shot), Sigma 150 hsm macro, Nikkor 85mm PC, Sigma 100-300 hsm...and all sorts of tripods, flashes, softboxes and other stuff...not easy to carry all of that...

For a beginner, what equipment would you recommend to start on with a project like the one your currently doing? I specifically like the Nikon brand, but willing to try Olympus or what not. Also, looking at budget issues. I'm looking at least less then $1000 for a good starter set. Would really love your advice.
