Description

The remains of Saint Mary’s Church located at Yarra, which is a rural area about eleven kilometres south of the city of Goulburn in New South Wales, Australia. It was a small place of worship, dating back to sometime in the late 1800’s.

The church was still in use well into the 20th century, but was destroyed by fire in the 1980’s. A small cemetery is located next to the church, and this is still maintained by the local community. Some of the headstones date back to the 1870’s and consist of 26 marked graves and another 15 are unmarked graves.

The historian in me appreciates the photo, and all the other work that you have put in here.

This was established at a time when people walked or used real horse power to get to church, it was small because only a few people could get there each Sunday, as it was about eleven kilometres west of Goulburn it is likely that at least some of the congregation walked about five kilometres each way to get there.  It was obviously a central part of the community, living and dead.

Thank you for posting this.

Thank you for your comment and many places such as this would certainly have many a story to tell if they could speak.

That was my intention as I find it interesting reading the detail and epitaphs written on headstones as families express their grief at the loss of loved ones.
As always, I appreciate your comments on my work.
