Thanks! I really want to draw a jackelope stripping the velvet from new antlers as well, but that involves a little more research first.

I absolutely love your choice of composition in this, and I especially adore how almost fae-like he is.

This is still one of my own personal favourite things I ever did. Mostly because it just all happened as if by accident. I love it when pictures sort of build themselves around a single point.

Funny how that seems to work out half the time. Some of my favorite pieces were entirely unpremeditated as well, so I know how that goes very well. Something about intuition guiding the hand makes the imagery more potent and fit better.

Hauntingly beautiful. It evokes the same kind of sense of dreamlike myth as the books of Alan Garner, Charles DeLint and Robert Holdstock.

That's possibly one of the nicest things you could have said - I love Charles de Lint. Have you ever read Terri Windling? Her novel The Wood Wife was the thing I was reading just before painting this.

Oh, I love the Wood Wife. My late wife lived in New Mexico for 10 years and said how well it evoked the essesnce of the SouthWest.

The Wood Wife is a very serious contender for my favourite book in the whole world. It's always a treat to meet someone who's even heard of it, let alone who also loves it!

have you read Robert Holdtock's 'Mythago wood' series?

vladimirsangel In reply to WoodWose [2011-03-07 22:07:38 +0000 UTC]

I haven't. But if you're recommending it, I shall certainly try to track it down. What do you like about it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WoodWose In reply to vladimirsangel [2011-03-07 22:52:32 +0000 UTC]

where to start? The way it suggests that we are tied to the land and landscape on a level far deeper than our waking, concious minds can percieve. The descriptions of smell, textures etc are almost visceral, it touches upon myth in a Jungian maner, and for me as a reader it has that way of making you experience the story, when the characters are under threat, your heart quickens, and you are drawn into the narative, feverisly reading, turning pages desperate to see what happens next.

vladimirsangel In reply to WoodWose [2011-03-08 09:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Now that's an endorsement!

I am also fond of Jung's methods and writings so this is definitely sounding like a good option for me. Having glanced at Wikipedia I see there are a whole set of them. Always good, if a good series (like the Newford series) has a lot for readers to embark upon.

Kaffles [2009-08-24 11:12:12 +0000 UTC]

You managed to combine cute with elegant seamlessly. The creature's body language is beautifully expressive, and its anatomy has an almost human-like quality without being typically "anthro."

And as for the colouring? Simply beautiful. Especially the tail and hind legs.

vladimirsangel In reply to Kaffles [2009-08-25 14:24:37 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou The body pose was one of those happy accidents: I was sketching quite idly and the shape that came out was pleasing, so I transferred it to watercolour.

Aaaah yes, I love it when art doesn't come out exactly the way you want it to, but BETTER. Most of my better art came into existance that way.

You're welcome

Congratulations on the DD, this is a stunning piece of work. The perspective of the trees is amazing and the detail on the fur is brilliant, I don't know how you achieved that with watercolour, you are a genius!

vladimirsangel In reply to pho0b [2008-04-27 08:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou very much. The watercolours made up the bulk of the piece, but it is a mixed media - there are detail touches in coloured pencil and pastel in areas like the fur and the highlights.

Unusual subject matter to be sure, but I think it was very well done. To be honest, I haven't ever been highly impressed by renderings of jackalopes, until now. This very soft, and you used a muted, naturally occurring palette which makes this creature a lot more believable. The face is also very well drawn, and i am glad you didn't do the usual "beady eye" look that most people give a jackalope, which gives your piece a real sense of being alive. Well done, and a well deserved daily deviation

vladimirsangel In reply to ImAGirlNamedMichael [2008-04-27 08:23:03 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou for your thoughtful and detailed comment - always much appreciated! Whenever I draw my jackalope I seem to want to put him down as naturalistically as possible, and I always enjoy putting the life into his eyes. Eyes are nearly always my favourite part of a character piece.

...by the way, your signatures make me giggle.

ImAGirlNamedMichael In reply to vladimirsangel [2008-04-27 17:01:45 +0000 UTC]

I think are are the most important part of a piece. Eyes that are not well rendered can ruin it sometimes.

I'm glad you like the signature...lots of people tell me they get a laugh from it
