Description The Orkut class was the first indigenous post-war Lukanyan destroyer class. Built at Uraporo, the two ships were laid down in December 1954 and launched in 1955. The first ship, Orkut, was commissioned into the recently-formed Lukanyan Maritime Defence Force in April 1956 while the second ship, Baykut, followed in June. They were named after the golden eagle and bald eagle respectively.
Almost all equipment for the ships was provided by the United States, as they carried an armament of three 5"/38 main guns, 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns, and numerous anti-submarine weapons including Hedgehog mortars and depth charge throwers, in addition to American radar and sonar systems.
Upon entering service, Orkut became the flagship of the LMDF and was stationed at the naval base in Ekopara, Yasan. She lead the LMDF's first overseas training voyage to Hawaii in 1958 and was the first Lukanyan vessel to enter Pearl Harbour since the attacks of 1941.
In 1959 both ships were refitted with Mk.43 anti-submarine torpedoes replacing some of the K-guns. They also received modernised electronics systems. In May 1962 Baykut was involved in a collision with Japanese destroyer Harugumo while on a training exercise, causing slight damage to both ships. She was repaired shortly after and was back in service by August. In 1975, both Orkut class were re-designated training ships. They served this role until being decommissioned in 1985. Orkut was scrapped in 1987 while Baykut was moored at the LMDF Ekopara Training School. She was eventually scrapped in 2001.
