I would very much like to see one in real life. Nice work!, all the details and the light.

M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, is a naked-eye object that's larger in the sky (albeit considerably dimmer) than the moon. It's easy to find by following the point of the more pointed V in Cassiopea: earthsky.org/tonight/star-hopp⦠. On a dark night with clear skies, it looks like a greyish smudge, and with binoculars, like a greyish disk with a bright centre.
There are also plenty of naked-eye nebulae.Β The Orion Nebula, located in the sword of Orion, is one of the easiest to find and to see -- again, looking like a grey smudge with the naked eye on a clear night.Β Here's a photo of it that I took with a 400 mm photographic lens from a rooftop in Seattle (despite the city light pollution):

Hey!
Any thoughts about updating your prion misfolding animation (that is SO good!) to incorporate the new info about the shape?
Cheers

Could do!Β Research is keeping me busy at the moment, but it might be a good project to tackle over a holiday.

Hi, this is epic! Is there a way i can possibly use this for my newest video, I use pics in after effects and make videos for my music. If so I would give you credits and a shout-out on my album release (:Β

Oh, the marks on the hindquarters of "My Little Pony" ponies? If that's what you meant, sure, I guess -- if you want to redraw it in the style of one of those marks, go for it. I don't think you need my permission to create original art of your own inspired in part by one of my pieces; you only need permission if you're using a work of mine directly (e.g. if you wanted to copy-and-paste it onto the flank of a pony).
Cheers!

Terrific work. It looks great!
Is the blue/white cloud thing in the outer ring part of the fractal or is it a brush?

vmulligan In reply to ChristopherLowe [2011-12-09 04:31:10 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
Oh, no -- that outer part is fractal too. The pale orange gradient at the centre was added in Photoshop, but the texture is all from Apophysis.

I definately like.... I'm currently working on a project atm that requires I design a "galaxy" but I dunno, all my experience is photoshop. I'll look into this Apophysis and see what that's about.

vmulligan In reply to SinfulTemplar [2011-12-03 07:49:04 +0000 UTC]
Apophysis is a fractal program. It's not always easy to get a desired shape, though you can always get interesting shapes. It's possible to make galaxies with it, but you might have better luck just sticking with Photoshop.
Still, it's free and it's fun -- so there's nothing lost by playing around with it!
