Description
I love the idea of repainting old stuff but never had a chance to do such thing.Now it's summer and I have a little time so let try it out.
This is a design I've done 2 years ago when i first started painting. At that time, I was using the black&white under painting, but eventually found it not needed. Now I just throw color in directly and blend them together, works much better

Darn, this is so great! I have no experience with color painting though I want to try it some time. I learned that many pro digital painters including those working for Blizzard use black & white under-painting. Now you say it is not necessary so I am surprised!

Traditionally, there are two techniques commonly used among artists. the one with black and white under painting is called Flemish or Grisaille, you can google that out if you need more info, or you can check out here a sample living master painter of that black& white technique, Alexei Antonov [link] and here is a free lesson on that [link]
The weakness of this technique is that it requires lots of time and care, thus, doesn't fit for landscape paintings, which you have to paint really quick to catch the mood of the scene in a particular short amount of time, before the sun changes its position. So, the impressionist painters had to throw in color directly in order to do that. It's not for landscape only, but also many things else. The French academic painter really love this technique. The way digital painting works is that it just an imitation of traditional painting. Once you get to know the origin, you will learn what is right for you
