A self portrait I painted in Corel Painter, oil on canvas. Based on an excellent photo by Cameron (cbards).

My last few digital portraits looked a bit too "synthetic" or airbrushed for my taste. I suspect this was due to the fact I used a perfectly radial brush and overused the smudge tool. In contrast, for this work I used a more realistic brush and forwent the smudge tool all together opting to blend with brush strokes. I think that this resulted in a far more traditional appearance. I added an impasto layer upon completion of the work in order to complete this look (although I am undecided about this and may remove it later).

The hand in particular gave me quite a lot of trouble due to the high contrast and straight-on angle but overall I am not too displeased with how it turned out considering I've only drawn (never painted) hands before.
