c'mon, i think you know yo uwork is impressive - and i don't say this because i have no idea how to do it on my own. the details, the lightning and the massive details are mindblowing - even the textures are missing it's easy to see this is brilliant. and everyone how is able to create this knows and understands better than me how much work is behind this image.

thanks for sharing - next to the inspiration this is a massive motivation to keep trying to get better and better.

Kind regards; J.

HAha thanks again, but trust me. When you work in the game industry and you see the massive amounts of amazing artwork out there. It's very hard to develop too much of an ego!

Insanely impressive man!!

Quick question...

Is the rock formation a solid piece? Or are you using tillables for the rock surface?

I just noticed this submission is a few months old, but congrats nonetheless with the job!

vonkoz In reply to AutopsySoldier [2011-12-02 16:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Hey thanks man the rock formation is one solid piece, however! In my interview they said that they would have preferred that the rock formation be constructed out of smaller pieces that could be reused in other ways. As it is constructed now the rock piece can only be used in this once scene.

Also I only stayed with ND for 9 months I work for Nintendo now. ND was not all it's cracked up to be. But I still think they do amazing work.

AutopsySoldier In reply to vonkoz [2011-12-03 00:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, that makes sense to have it be reusable. Cool that they were able to critique too.

Just read your response to that other guy about leaving ND cause of too much crunch time? I hear ya dude. Constant long hours can really bog down a person.

Keep on rockin dude!

vonkoz In reply to AutopsySoldier [2011-12-08 18:54:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man! There were lot of reasons I left. They have a weird system of management at ND that I didn't gel with. Also I wasn't crazy about working on realistic games. I also left because I got an offer to be a Lead at Square Enix. Unfortunately soon after I started they canceled our project and laid our team off. I'm at Retro now, Retro is a much better fit for me. Hell who hasn't grown up playing Nintendo games. Now I get to work on them.

Seriously gorgeous work, dude! Congrats on the position, you've earned it. Excuse my ignorance (if it's been mentioned anywhere else), what did you render this in?

Thank you, although I'm no longer at ND I rendered this in mental ray for max

IvanMijatov In reply to vonkoz [2011-07-02 10:58:24 +0000 UTC]

My apologies, I didn't know! If you don't mind me asking, why did you leave ND? I was under the impression that you just started working there. I'm building up my port to work there one day, if possible. Would you care to share any advice for a fellow character artist? I hear it's highly challenging to get in there.

vonkoz In reply to IvanMijatov [2011-07-02 21:07:37 +0000 UTC]

I work at ND for 9 months ( as an environment artist) and left basically because I found I did not enjoy working on realistic projects. As you can see from my work I favor stylized stuff. Also the studio culture at ND favor lots and lots of crunch. Definitely not conducive to family and married life. It's not terrible at all, but just not for everyone. As for characters, man at ND you have to be first class. Take a look at the work of Hanno Hagedorn to see how good you need to be.
[link] keep practicing and good luck!

Thanks for the sincere feedback! The crunch is not too troublesome yet because, although engaged, am not married quite yet. Still a good thing you brought it up, nonetheless, so that I'm fully aware of it. That's my understanding too about character artists there. I've been paying more attention to Hanno's and Byunghwa's artworks for one or two now. I appreciate your feedback, it's invaluable.

What exactly was the test? They gave you a concept and said to create it without a texture? I mean that is obviously a lot of work that had to have been hours. Is it from scratch or what

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vonkoz In reply to dpadam450 [2011-02-12 20:57:41 +0000 UTC]

It's totally from scratch. They just provided me with a concept and some reference and told me to go at it. The only limits I was given was a 120k tri limit, and while I didn't have to texture it, I did have to represent my alpha cards with something. It was probably one of the most difficult art tests I've ever done. Naughty Dog has VERY high standards. I'd say it took roughly 60-80 hours to complete.

dpadam450 In reply to vonkoz [2011-02-13 04:35:33 +0000 UTC]

Yea I've gone through lots of programming tests and its all b/s. Game companies act so godly when they are just people. It annoys me. 60 hours of work is totally b/s unless they gave u a piece that they intend to use and are going to pay you for. That actually the most ridiculous test I've seen for art and/or programming.
