I'm surprised nobody has asked me that yet . Well, let's see...(this will be rather long and somewhat complicated. Feel free to ask any questions)
First, I put a dark basecoat on the weapon's blade. In this case, since they're reddish, I use Red Gore. If they were blue, I'd use Royal Blue; if they were green, I'd use Dark Angels Green.
Next, I get the colours that I want to blend. In this case, Blood Red, Mecharius Solar Orange, and Sunburst Yellow. (~ShalkenTanari , my twin, uses Enchanted Blue and Ice Blue [link] )
I also get something that I can mix colours on (I use the Games Workshop's palette [link] ). On that palette, I mix Blood Red and Mecharius Solar Orange, about 50/50, along with just a little drop of water. For me, the jury's still out on whether the water helps, but I'm using that just for now. Then, since I have three main colours, I mix Mecharius Solar Orange and Sunburst Yellow. (50/50, small drop of water as well)
Then comes the actual blending part. First I put on a 'base' (from lowest to highest on the weapon) B. Red, B. Red/M.S. Orange, M.S. Orange, M.S. Orange/S. Yellow mix, and finally S. Yellow. This is just to get on a base so that when you blend, the colours don't rub off and show the Red Gore underneath.
Next, once it's dried, I put a little bit more paint where the red and the red/orange mix meet, just to get them a bit wet. Then I take a clean brush and mix the two together so that I get a sort of blended area. Now it will not always be perfect; sometimes I've had a lot of trouble with it. You're just trying to make the line separating the two colours blurred so that you can't see it. Once that's done, I do the same thing with the other colours.
Afterward, I'll spray a coat of Purity Seal (matt varnish) on the whole model, then paint the weapon with 'Ardcoat (gloss varnish). Then you're done!
I usually wait to do this until I have several models that need it done; I don't usually like mixing because the mixed paint dries once you're done. (right now, I actually have three Grey Knights that need their halberds done...)
Now for some models (for example, [link] and [link] )
I used a different method for the power weapons. I only blend on blades; for 'pounding' weapons like those, I put lightning on them. This is done by putting interconnecting lines of Ice Blue all over the area, then painting a layer of Skull White on the blue that still leaves a bit of the blue showing. Matt Varnish, Gloss varnish, and then you have some shiny weapons for pounding!
If you have any more questions, by all means ask away. (and if you haven't seen it already, check out my lava painting tutorial [link] )
Hope all of this helped!

I tried to shave/cut off as much as the Blood Angel icons as I could, but there was some stuff that I wasn't able to take off without severely damaging the model.
