This is a great pic, as are all of yours, I would mention one thing, however, a Roman shield (or Scutum) doesn't strap over a soldier's forearm. It is held by a single latitudinally mounted handle inside the shield boss, at the center of the shield. Otherwise, this is perfect! Also before the late 2nd century Roman soldiers wore their sword on the right side while Centurions wore theirs on the left.

Thank you very much!

Yes, I drew this picture many years ago and have since realised the mistake on the shield. I hate looking at my old art work and seeing the mistakes I made.

I drew his sword on the left because at Mytilene Caesar was a junior military tribune, not a normal legionary, so I went with a general rule of all officers above the rank of Centurion (which included the aristocrats who were only there to further their political careers)on the left, legionaries on the right. Plus, that's they way they're drawn in all the Osprey books!

I have thought several times about redrawing this picture to update it, like I did with the Sulla & Jugurtha one. These days it's all just a question of finding the time though!

Thanks for taking your time to look at my stuff!

Ah, the Ospreys. It's gonna take me a looooong time to get as good as old Angus McBride, but I soooo love his work, also some of the newer guys like Sean O'Brogain, Peter Dennis and non-Osprey guy Johnny Shumate. Keep up your great work.
Also, I know that feeling of looking at old work and wanting to fix it, but ya gotta move on and not be like George Lucas, always revising stuff from years and years ago.

I do like the fact that Caesar was always a soldier deep down. It's just the mental image of him hopping off his horse, grabbing a sword, and running off to the front lines. Certainly one way to rally your troops!

Nicely done.

Unfortunatley, my history classes have never been too good, but it sounds like an intresting topic!
