Description i was in the photographer's chatroom yesterday and the conversation meandered its way to cats. that, of course, got me thinking about my own cat. gemma has been with my family for about 15 years now. we adopted her from the spca. at that time, the vet estimated her age to be around 2 years, so that would make her 17yrs old or thereabouts.

that's pretty old for a cat!

all these years, she's been a quiet and relatively fuss-free componant of our lives. over the past few years, she's slowed down a fair bit; she can't quite reach the ledges she used to love to jump up on, and doesn't chase after bouncing balls anymore. she's also been getting thin and walks occasionally with a limp. but thanks to the good care she's received, she doesn't look her age one bit!

taking portraits of pets (or animals and maybe children in general) must be one of the most frustrating exercises in patience a photographer has to endure. it's horribly difficult to get a good picture of gemma because she hates the camera, so this is truly a rare shot where she's looking straight at me. the lighting isn't the most ideal, but i'll take what i can get!

i don't know how long more you'll be with me, so here's a big thank you for the joy you've brought into my life, gemma.

cats means joy to me
my cat and I have been together since I was two.
Today she's 16, an I am 18. her black fur is alittle grey and massy today, but she's always content and happy just to know I am around. And I can't be without her.
I'm stuck be the cat animals eyes...there's always something about that look in the eye that makes me admire them..... or maybe I just feel safe when I see those, i've had those musterious eyes watching me nearly all my life though. Anyway, I like your picture ...and how you manage yourself to get such a great picture on a cat!
.... mine just turn away her head...and only when i'm holding the camera... --.--'' irretating.

that's a long time to be together. i'm sure you have wonderful memories of growing up with your cat!

i know what you mean about the mysterious eyes of cats. they are like brilliant jewels, aren't they?

you should share a picture of your cat on your gallery some time. i know it's not easy to take a good picture, but keep trying!

I know what you mean! My cat has this habit of pouncing at my camera, whenever I try to take a photo of him I have some quite funny action shots with the paw going straight for the lens, but it's hard to get a still shot of him

action shots can be great. but i guess it's capturing the essence of your pet which is the challenge and which will leave you with a fond memory long after they are gone.

don't stop trying to get a good shot of your cat!

Your cat has a great kitty face, and beautiful eyes! Cats are the best pets in my opinion, I will always have at least 1 in my house.

thanks, yes she does indeed have a sweet face and expression. it was one of the things which captivated me when i was at the spca.

she was hiding in a little pet carrier in a corner of the pen. i never even saw her till she stepped tentatively out just as i was about to leave. i instantly changed my mind about which cat i was going to adopt and picked her instead!

i'm so glad i did.

what a beautiful animal, and the thought as well. i know what you mean about bringing joy....... animals are true gifts, arent they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

voxnocturne In reply to wuju [2006-10-06 16:24:20 +0000 UTC]

yes, they are gifts indeed to make our sojourn on earth a little more grounded and heartfelt. with animals, we have to learn to think outside ourselves and give a part of us away. we enjoy them in the process, but they help us to be who we truly can be as a person.

Great shot for a cat. I own a cat too, he's still young, that makes it even more difficult to get a good picture.

yeah but once you get a great shot, where everything is perfect - pose, expression, angle, lighting... wow, that will be a really special picture you'll treasure forever. so keep trying!
