Description Meet Veronica Flint. Loyal advisor as well as "problem solver" for VX. Daisy Democracy will be learning about her soon!

Prologue 5: Crossroads
"Life's the same, I'm moving in stereo
Life's the same except for my shoes
Life's the same, you're shakin' like tremolo
Life's the same, it's all inside you"
The Cars Moving In Stereo

The entire building seemed to come to a reverent halt as the man wearing the royal purple & gold floral tuxedo entered the lobby. Mid 50s though barely looked 40. In excellent physical condition though not specifically athletic or muscular in appearance. Years of dedication to DDP Yoga and picky eating habits had made him seem younger than men in their 30s.

"Good morning, Mister Macklin."

"Hello, Mister Macklin."

"Nice to see you, Mister Macklin."

The man walked through the lobby of VX Towers, warmly greeting each employee, from an executive department manager to a ground floor security guard.

A copy of Money Matters was handed to him by one secretary. Another handed him a hot cup of coffee laced with Laird Superfood Creamer. Gluten and dairy free were the only acceptable creamers to Victor Xavier Macklin.

Upon entering his office and sitting down, VX was immediately served an omelet made from organic eggs, spinach, tomatoes and goat cheese. Again, gluten and dairy free.

"Good morning, Mister Macklin," the young blond with the slight European accent said as she served the most powerful man in Empire City his breakfast.

"Good morning to you as well," he said. "You must be new here." Macklin had an almost unnerving ability to remember every single person he ever met, even if just for five seconds.

"Yes, sir," the young woman said. "My name is Candece Angelos. I am a grad student on an internship."

She offered her hand. He shook it very professionally. Candece had been briefed on how to introduce herself. Though she certainly could have used her attractive looks to try and get his attention, one of the first things she had been warned by her mentor was to absolutely avoid trying to flirt with Mister Macklin under any circumstances. "The very second he feels you are trying to manipulate him, you will be out of the internship program and back in your home country."

"Who are you working with, Miss Angelos?"

"Rebecca Flint, sir."

"Excellent! One of my finest employees." He picked up a phone. "Miss Flint. Yes. I want you to test Miss Angelos on everything she is skilled at. Find her strengths. And her weaknesses. Today will be the last day she is to serve breakfast."

Candece's eyes almost started to water. "Did-did I something wrong? I'm sorry, sir...."

He shook his head. "No. Far from it. Actually, I just think you can do much more."

She was a near 10 out of 10 on the physical appearance scale but had been completely professional in her interactions with him. Despite the warning, many young women still tried to use their sex appeal to further their way into his good graces.

He would lead them on. Take them to one of his private suites. Fuck them all night long.

Then fire their ass the very next day.

And none of them could ever beat him in a sexual harassment case when he practically owned the judges in Trinity Point.

But this woman was all business. And had proven she could take orders very well.

After leading Candece from his office, Cross made another call.

"Mister Bergen. Yes, it's VX Cross. I noticed one of your long-time security guards who has worked my building for fourteen years is missing. Yes, that's what I was told. He failed a hair follicle drug test. You do know those are notorious for false positives. Right. It's your policy. Well, this is my policy. Loyalty. That man had near perfect attendance for fourteen years. Did everything we asked him to do. And I want him back in my building. And if you don't return Mister Todd to work on Monday. You do know your contract expires in four months, right? Right. If Mister Todd is not returned to his post in my building on Monday, Alliance Security will not have the contract this summer. Do I make myself clear? Good. Maybe you wouldn't be struggling with such a high turnover rate if you showed your good employees a little more loyalty."

Next, he checked his personal messages. The usual reports about upcoming meetings, questions his underlings could answer, pleas for donations.

And this one.

"The Brooks woman has disappeared."

The gritted teeth scowl he gave to this message was as much of an outward angry emotion one would ever see from Victor Xavier Macklin.

But inside he was fuming!

First the lady cop. And now this.

Ignoring his omelet, he headed out of his office without even a sip of the coffee.

"Veronica, get a hold of Diaz. I need him to oversee the operations here. I have an emergency meeting out of town. I'll be back by Monday."
