I saw something very similar when I was in the Navy and at sea, the only difference was the sun only had the pink glow for a few seconds as it was setting over the horizion with firey red clouds. Everyone thought it was very strange and talked about it for weeks. Course nobody on the flight deck had a camera!!

It happened by chance - visiting a friend I saw this blood red sun and asked him for his Nikon D70 because I had no camera, too
