I'm really happy to see this and your work. I love my pencil work but I have struggled with coloring, people suggest I go to digital lines but I never like them, same with ink. I love the soft detail I can get from pencil, but again coloring has been an issue since most people want colored art. Seeing your work and your progress, I hope to find a better balance with my pencil and digital coloring. Thank you!

Thankyou, best way to work with colour(in photoshop), is to build it up layer for layer. I will be doing more work in progress pieces soon , so that you can get an idea of the process.

I look forward to that, thank you! I tend to smear things smooth too much, I guess I am afraid to be very brushy or expressive. Plus I tend to be slow to use new brushes or new programs, I have had Photoshop CS4 for a long time and haven't tried anything new.

One of the hardest things for me to get used to was to stop trying to preserve my pencil lines, just paint over them ,to a degree they will still be there, but more as part of the under painting once you can get your head around that you will find yourself been more expressive and less afraid to paint.

Thanks for the tutorial! It's very insightful.
One question if you don't mind: if you're using gray tones for the shading initially and then just multiply color on top, how do you keep the gray tones from looking...well...gray and muddy? Are you simply painting solid color details on top?

Hiya, yes after I have laid the base colours down in multiply layer , the layers added next are solid colours.

Just lots of practice, also I dont work on the image longer than 1-2 hours a day, that way i find myself looking at it with a fresh approach each time. That has helped allot as well

Funny that you mention that. Lately I've been doing the same thing, but not quite by choice. It feels a little too scattered, but perhaps I just need to get beyond a certain point in the drawing for it to feel settled enough...
Anyway, thanks for the insight into your process, I really appreciate it!

Thankyou MissKenchi Yeah I am still old school like that - I love drawing in pencil.

It's great, and it works really well. Hopefully soon I'll be able to give digital painting a go myself; I didn't think I'd ever be able to get my original pencil lines to work so easily.
