It is a comedy blog, but that doesn't mean there can't be a story. In fact, all the characters have some kind of detailed backstory, which you can read here .
As for why, you'll have to take that up with the project manager, who takes his characterization VERY seriously.

Well that was a mistake. If you trigger Pun like that, I'm not so sure she'll care whether she's displaying suspiciously good combat skills.

For all we know, the ex-military bartender could have been in the Navy, the Army Medical Services, the Royal Logistic Corps, etc.
Nothing really akin to being a front-line trooper or an artillery or combat engineer.
