Personality:
Lazy – Kulala’s almost constant headaches are triggered by action, loud noises, and excitement. Therefore, he is most of the time rather unwilling to do much that involves actually doing something. He would much prefer to lie down and sleep all day. However, he is always willing to run so long as it does not include fighting or hunting.

Sarcastic/apathetic – Getting too emotionally involved also sets off his headaches. He is good at controlling his own emotions related to himself, but he is rather easily influenced by others. If he should feel sad, troubled, or happy because of someone else, his headaches will still be triggered. Because of this, Kulala tries his best not to become close to anyone or care about anyone. To help this, he mostly acts cold and antisocial to most others.

Lonely – And because he won’t allow himself to make relationships, he has no friends. Kulala’s nature is actually very friendly and polite, but his headaches don’t agree with such a personality and so he must conceal that side of him lest he be in constant pain. Watching others have fun and play without having to worry about migraines or pain while he sits alone is sad and lonely for Kulala.

Insane – Kulala’s accident that created these migraines also rattled him up quite a bit in the mental aspect. Though most of the time he is self-aware and calm, there can be moments where the pain of his headaches is too much to bear and his emotions overcome him. He will then lose his head and start to sputter nonsense. He can become aggressive and especially cruel during these moments. Less often he will simply become depressed. These episodes are usually short and when his sanity returns he doesn’t remember most of what he was doing just before. Being around others helps make these episodes less often and less severe.

Brief History: When Kulala was just a moon old he made a dare with his brothers and climbed the tallest tree. He made it all the way to the top, but as he started to descend he lost his grip and fell to the ground. He landed square on his head and was out cold for the next three days. When he came to, he seemed all right other than having a large bump on his head. However, the next time he tried to play with his siblings, a severe headache pierced his skull. The pain would only subside if he stopped moving and relaxed. Any time he tried to play again the pain would return. This is how it has been for Kulala ever since.

Before the accident Kulala was actually a very brave and outgoing cub. He would wander off with his siblings, always the leader and the one with all the ideas, and then later would stand up for his siblings when they got punished. The accident helped simmer this wild attitude down significantly, and not only because he would be in pain if he kept the troublemaking up. Sitting on the sidelines and not being able to play anymore made him mature faster. He had a lot of time to think and learn, though he has absolutely to paws on experience with hunting or fighting. He can still climb, but only very slowly, and he refuses to ever climb higher than the first branch of any tree. Climbing back down takes him even slower to do.

Kulala has by now learned what triggers his migraines and how to keep them at bay. Even the smallest action can cause piercing pain through his skull, like jumping, falling down, or shaking. Getting too emotional also heightens the pain. The more pain he feels, the more likely he is to have another episode. So he spends most of his time sleeping. The only reason he is not overweight is because he has found that running actually soothes his headaches. Somehow the wind blowing through his ears relaxes him enough that it makes the migraines go away for a little while. However he must always run straight and smoothly as to not rattle his head too much.

Kulala’s episodes of “insanity” have so far only ever been mild and brief. He has never lashed out or attacked anyone yet. Usually he is only particularly nasty to others and mutters nonsense to himself until it goes away. However, they have gradually been becoming more severe as his feelings of loneliness increase. He is hoping that becoming a tyro will help him to control this.

Tch! Too loud. Kulala squinted one eye hard shut as a bout of sharp pain struck his skull. His mother withdrew her tongue from his fur and lifted an apologetic paw to her mouth. When Kulala looked over to her, she smiled sadly. “Just try to keep a cool head, baby.” Kulala only frowned at the advice.

His mother spoiled him and called him “baby” all the time, even though he was already 8 moons old. She was especially vigorous with this today as this was the day he was going to finally become a tyro. His other siblings had gone ahead of him two moons ago. Kulala had been left behind because of his migraines. His mother was worried it was too soon and he wasn’t ready. He had always been the last one to get anything since the accident. However now he was 8 moons old and it was now or never to prove that he was actually capable of doing something despite his migraines. He could contribute to the tribe and he was going to prove it!

Damn—! Too emotional. Kulala rubbed his aching head with a small groan. His mother went to lick the spot but he leaned away. Enough was enough. It was time for him to finally grow up and move on, with or without this burden. It wasn’t like he was a runt. He was taller than his siblings and most cubs his age. He was also quite fast. That was why he had chosen to become a messenger tyro. So long as he could run and run and run without ever having to fight or hunt, he would be okay.

“I’m going now,” Kulala announced quietly, standing up and taking a few steps from his mother. He stopped just before the threshold of the nursery den. He was now on his way to meet the chief and be promoted to a tyro rank. This was the last time he was going to be in here. Kulala glanced back at his mother once more, who sat there smiling her kind, proud smile that she had always giving him despite how disappointing he must have really been to her. However somehow he knew that wasn’t it at all.

The sorrow and loneliness seeping into Kulala’s throat make his migraine grow stronger. So without another word he turned away and walked out of the den, leaving his mother and his futureless past behind him.
