I hate to go against the flow here, but it seems your focusing is a bit off.

2 pencils before the actual "misplaced" one is in sharp focus, yet the subject pencil seems out of focus and a bit over exposed. You used a very small F. number.

Its a very good idea, but i feel a better reading of the subject pencil and better focus would help alot

I agree, the odd thing about this photo is it was sort of spontaneous - random even, and I didn't think it was ever going to be a photo that I would produce... It has bugged me, exactly what you mentioned - the focus isn't perfect, also if you look carefully, the slant of the beginning and ending pencils may begin to bug you. Thank you so much for the critique In my defense though, actually did intend to push the white pencil to overexposure

Thanks so so much for all the time you spent looking at this one, it seems you really got to thinking about it - I appreciate it immensely.

You know, this is an odd coincidence. I was thinking of sketching out a rough drawing of a crowd of people all in the dark and then put on person on the fringe with a shaft of light flowing onto them.

I love the way you did this. I don't know if it was intentional, but the black pencils seem to be going in this wave-like motion, like society when we are told to conform to it all the time. Then the white pencil just *BAM* stands out. Love it

did you really take this picture yourself?

I looked at your 'veil lifted', but I definetally like this one better

It says something about the world and society today

It looks like it belongs somewhere where everyone can see it.

Hehe.
I will have to come back and explore this one more, and through your art, discover something within me - something eternal, never lost
After viewing this, I thought --- Maybe this pencil is the only one in place? Or maybe, it's an optical illusion due to our conceptions. Maybe we are all in this place. Maybe there is one place that we pain for, that we create pain for, and that we endure pain for.

I love the beauty of the imperfection. The 'out of place' pencil creates beauty. The disruption seems to create harmony.

I think it's wonderful. Thank you for sharing your art with dA.

Love

that was a really pretty comment. thanks a ton. I'm glad that I could invoke such an emotion in you.

You know, I feel a little bit more "in place" every day now, even though still I'm different. I totally see what you mean, when you're Out of place, maybe you're exaclty the place God wanted you right then.

that is such a beautiful and meaningful picture. i especially love how it seems to be symbolic that the out of place pencil is white...while the others are black. sad that too many people only know what the world tells them.

eggwacker [2005-02-05 03:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Excellent job with this photo. I think what caught my attention right away was the composition. You've done a great job placing the pencils within the frame. The angle that you shot it is also well judged. I like how the white pencil is past the horizontal center, and how there's slightly more black pencils in the forefront than in the back. Any further back or closer and it wouldn't have been as effective. The crop is also excellent, might I add, and it's nicely presented. Technique and compositionwise, my only criticism is that the pencils are at an angle, and I would've preferred it if you had rotated it back to horizontal.

Ok, now to why I really like this photo...the concept. You've illustrated it brilliantly. As Christians, we are different from other people on this world. Our paths are different, and we live by a higher calling...that of the life of Christ. We're part of the world, but we aren't imprisoned by it. It's not an easy message to convey, yet with one simple set of colored pencils, you've conveyed it perfectly. Well done, bro. Much Grace. Hope you gain a portion of the Lord this weekend!

This is beautiful. I love the meaning behind it. It so hard to stand out or be an individual in the crowd. And to me, that's what this pencil is doing, being brave enough to be "himself". I know you named it "out of place" which to me brings to mine several circumstances i've come into recently, being out of place though, ends up being fun...

It's so regular that to me it isn't even strange.
What do I mean by that? Basically, I mean this: I have always stood out among this world by the way I act, the way I dress, and the way I talk. Yes, I have had some "persecution" because of it, but like you said "not of it." I can't pretend to be a part of it, if I was never made to be like that. What's sad for me is that I can also stand out among a crowd of Christians. (But that's a completely different subject.)
I love how you did this photo; the concept is wonderful. Very effective in portraying your message.

About a year ago, I bought this book full of various quotes. One day as I flipped through the pages reading random quotes, I came upon this one.
It was so perfect.
After that, I used this quote as my sig for various places.

But thanks, I'm glad that you like it. But too bad, it's not from my own mouth. Although I remember it being said somewhere that it is better to get a quote from someone else than to quote yourself. (Ummm... something like that.)

MurfQ In reply to JKenzie [2005-02-10 12:18:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I suppose it's a bit arrogant to quote yourself. Ooops, that's what I'm doing... Oh well, most people would never know that anyway... heh heh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JKenzie In reply to MurfQ [2005-02-11 22:52:06 +0000 UTC]

I think it depends in what context you quote yourself. Say if you are doing a speech, it's best not to quote yourself. But maybe you go around DA and find a deviation that reminds you of a joke between friends, then quoting what you said in the joke is fine.
Besides, I use my own quotes for the end of my journal entries now and then. Sometimes, I just say really crazy things and I like to share them with other people.
So don't worry about using your own quotes.
