Tabuu's last ditch effort to rapidly restore himself was going to be my way of nerfing the bad guys for later in the story, since he pulled most of the shadow bugs out of Vaati and Metal Sonic they weren't going to be quite as powerful going forward, they wouldn't have been total fall downs like from a pure comedy show, but Metal would have lost his neo form and Vaati wouldn't be able to enter his full demon form, though he'd still be able to summon Shadow Link.
