Hey, it's been a long long time since I posted a Deviant Dwellers comic, and like most of them this is loosely based off of an event in my real life. Now, I was a member of Stony Brook's Anime club for 4 years, and in that time I identified 3 schools of thought, those who HATE dubs, those who are fine either way, and those who hate subs. I don't see it as a black and white trichotomy, but rather I change my opinion depending on the show. If the dub was made by 4Kids for example, you can bet I'll be running to the nearest fansub site (such as Sonic X, One Piece, Yugioh, etc.) And there are a few anime series I actually PREFER in english, such as Big O. But to me the vast majority of anime can be taken in any language (so long as the voice actors have TALENT)...this is an opinion Kat and Megan did not share...Related content

I saw Haruhi too! ...It was the dub, and I never watched it subtitled. D= *Dun dun duuuun!*
But seriously, dubs aren't that bad, when made by the right people like Funimation, Viz, Bandai, Manga, and the like. They have the resources to give us the best and most accurate dub possible. The only companies not to be trusted with anime are companies like 4Kids and Disney and such. But you already knew that, didn't you? ^u^
As for the comic, I almost disagree. Not that Haruhi doesn't rock, but when it was over, it left me wanting more!

This one agrees with you on most of your points.
With Cowboy Bebop, an non-Japanese speaker (like this one) has a harder time catching the humor in Ed when Tada Aoi-san is doing the voice. But Melissa Fahn brings it out spot on! That said, this one owns the DVD's of all 26 sessions, so this one likes to flip back and forth between English and Japanese.
The only time this one had trouble keeping up with the subtitles while watching Haruhi is when Yuki is talking. That girls just talks WAY to fast.

I sometimes have trouble keeping up with subtitles too, but I usually watch them because they sometimes loose something in the dubbing, but I will sometimes go back and see how they dubbed a line in comparison to the original.

I think the ultimate case of a sub/dub contradiction was in the 3rd or 4th Hellsing movie (I forget which exactly) The leader of the millennium organization says "yes" and the subtitle says "no." The sarcastic intonation probably played into it, but everyone at the club was laughing over it.

We watched one series at my high school anime club that had an English section and the subtitles for it were hilarious.

This is where a knowledge of How Japanese Works comes into play. Sometimes, a person can say the word "yes" in Japanese, and mean "no," and vice versa. Tatoeba (for example):
A: "You didn't go, right?" "Ikimasendeshita, ne?"
B: "No, I didn't." "Hai, ikimasendeshita."
B's use of "hai" confirms the A's guess that B didn't go someplace. In essence B is saying "That is correct, I didn't go." The same thing works in reverse. Get me?
(We do the same thing in English, occasionally. For "You didn't go, right?" the answers "No, I did!" and "Yes, I did!" are both perfectly acceptable.)

Personally I like both subs and dubs for most things (including Haruhi).
Now, BigO and Cowboy Bebop⦠granted I've only see full eps in English⦠the clips I have seen in original just don't compare.
I mean come on, Steven J Blum, Crispin Freeman, and the other big names. You just canβt beat those guys

I've seen Big O and Cowboy Bebop in japanese. Bebop is fine, but it is weird to see the characters in Big O do it. They're all Caucasian people in a pseudo New York setting, that show feels like it's supposed to be in English.
