Description This comic is for everyone waiting for a custom figure from me, there's nothing I haven't said in comments or journals, but I figured the visual stimulus will grab more attention, and I'll have a convenient place to link to if people ask questions.

btw, my mobian avatar no longer wears pants, I found them too troublesome.

I only have them long enough to use them, once their package is sent I erase any copies I have for their protection. (and I don't ask for them until I'm done, that way I don't have to worry about losing it someplace)

no, the first thing you do is pay for the toy I purchase, and I work in american dollars, not pounds (most electronic payments do the conversion though)

KHwhitelion [2011-05-22 02:20:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow--only fifteen dollars? that's a great deal!

Just for curiousity's sake: could you make a Sally Acorn Figure? She's my fave Sonic gal, next to Lara-su/Jani-ca!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wakeangel2001 In reply to KHwhitelion [2011-05-22 02:38:36 +0000 UTC]

I've made Sally before, but I think it would look better and be easier to make her using Rouge as a base, which should hopefully be available in a couple months.

Also, I say $15, and so far I haven't charged anyone more than that, but I would raise the price for a highly detailed or otherwise hard to make custom, such as Excalibur Sonic or something like that.

You're seriously undercutting yourself. A halfway decent custom can go for hundreds. Consider what your time is worth, and the cost of materials when determining your commission prices. You're losing money at $15 for a custom.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wakeangel2001 In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-04-13 21:50:53 +0000 UTC]

I know I charge way less than most do, but I use really cheap materials and I'm not always sure if the stuff I make would hold up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tramp-Graphics In reply to Wakeangel2001 [2011-04-13 22:19:37 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't matter. You're still spending way more than you're earning. And you're selling yourself short. You certainly don't want to advertise that your work is shoddy. nor should you allow your work to be shoddy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wakeangel2001 In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-04-13 22:47:12 +0000 UTC]

I guess you're right, aside from some minor cracks in my early work everything I've made has held up remarkably well. How much would you charge for a custom figure on the 3 3/4 inch scale?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tramp-Graphics In reply to Wakeangel2001 [2011-04-14 02:02:34 +0000 UTC]

It depends upon how much your materials cost for that figure, as well as how much you feel your time is worth. I don't sell customs. I take illustration commissions. Most of my pricing comes from what I feel my time is worth. Most of the customizers I deal with are Transformers kitbashers, such as myself, and those customs do indeed cost much more in materials costs and time than a 3-3/4" Star Wars figure. And that is why they can go for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Think about this, the standard minimum wage in the US is currently $7.75 per hour. Even if you used that as your standard (which I do not suggest), it still takes easily over 20 man-hours to create a single custom action figure. Many customs take well over a hundred man-hours. I've had projects that took me multiple hundreds of man-hours. If I were to even consider selling those pieces, I wouldn't accept less than a couple of grand for them. There's just too much of an investment in my time and money. Mind you, those were big projects. Even a simple repaint though still takes several days to create. The actual man-hours easily exceeding 30 hours.

Figure out an hourly rate, calculate how long it typically takes for you to create an average custom, factor in materials costs, and use those figures to set your prices.

If I were you, I'd be charging $15 per hour for a piece, not $15 flat.
Unless you're cranking out one piece an hour, you're losing money.

I wonder if some of your people at the bottom of your waiting list would be willing to commission me to keep them from waiting. I don't mean to take business away from you but since you have 40+ people waiting and we are at about the same skill level it would make it easier anyway.
