Description eternal youth in the bottomless green...

The emerald is perfectly suited to the rites of Spring, matching the colours of the season with its green hue. Ancient Egyptians engraved emeralds with symbols of Spring foliage to represent eternal youth, and then buried the jewels with their dead. Elsewhere in the ancient world, the Romans associated emeralds with fertility and rebirth, which ties in with the general themes of the Spring season.

technical details:

- for *lucias-stock 's Gemstones contest. I chose the emerald because it is my birthstone, and for its association with Spring...
- reference photos: (for the model): [link] ; (for the mausoleum): [link]
- two weeks... countless hours - on and off because of school... work done on mostly the girl (and her dress), but some significant effort in painting the blades of grass, the majority of the trees, the emerald (and those swirly thingies)... and the mausoleum
- brushes: prettybrush + annikavonholdt + ~Shadow-Brushes + ~spiritsighs-stock + ~AutumnsGoddess-stox
- forest texture from =lockstock
- wacom graphire3, photoshopCS

commentary:

3:40 am: this'll probably be my last digital painting... at least for now - because of school and such. i nursed this painting day and night, albeit on and off, for a couple of weeks now - it's a real labour of love... i sure hope you like it...

I really like the way you painted the mausoleum... I think the piece would be stronger if you used the same painting technique for both the foreground and the background to maintain an overall sense of consistency and unity. in terms of the face, you have all the features there, you just need to soften them a bit, and blend the skin tone and stuff. your work on the dress and the buiding demonstrates attention to detail and the ability to recreate forms faithfully from a reference photo, so don't be afraid to treat the face that way as well; just think of the image as a group of shapes and colors.

how do you soften it? i'm still working on my painting skills...

i mean - what do you usually use? do you smudge? or blur? blending seems to be a challenge to me - as i am so used to doing manips that i get completely lost over what to do when i paint...

if I'm painting in photoshop, I use a round brush with 100% softness and airbrush. also, I tend to choose colors that are muted. it's hard to explain in writing, but there are some really good online tutorials in digital painting technique. also, if you're free on tuesdays between 4-6, I've been asked to do a presentation in an upcoming game programming club meeting, but I haven't finalized the date yet.

definitely let me know about a week in advance so i can work my work schedule around that - i'm very very interested...

i did find some really cool tutorials online - but what i do lack is patience... my paintings on canvas tend to look like the girl's dress - really rough, bold strokes - especially when i work with acrylics.

weee! you get to teach me!

It looks beautiful, but I think you might need to work on the face a little bit more.
The dress looks a little bit too big for the girl , but its overall very beautiful.
I love the background
