There's a headcanon that Sans is actually super smart and an ex-scientist right? The ship makes sense since Alphys won't feel so alone in her nerdiness XD

From what I understand, the plot and personalities are the same, and it's mostly just an aesthetic thing. The tumblr can probably explain it a lot better.
