Parties are hot. Like, with body heat.

CHAPTER FIVE

In just half an hour, almost two dozen more people showed up at Devon's house. You've got to wonder if the kid knows all of these people, or if most of them are just freeloaders. Then again, I guess I'm in no position to talk... being a proud member of the Freeloader's Association of America and all.
Things were going swell. I was sitting on the couch with Alyssa, talking to a junior boy named Leslie, (Ha, I feel bad for him!) and a girl named Gwen. We talked mostly about irrelevent, but amusing, things.
Leslie said, "So right now I'm just trying to get some action."
"You're such a pig." Gwen laughed.
"Nah," He said, "I broke up with my girlfriend, like, four months ago, and I'm just really in need of some release."
"I know how that is." Gwen said, "Hey, what was your first time like?"
Leslie made a face. I guess guys don't like to talk about this kind of stuff. Go figure.
"It was alright." He replied, taking a sip of whatever was in his Dixie cup, "Nothing amazing. The girl fell asleep on my fuckin' arm. When I woke up... it hurt so bad. It was limp for, like, the whole day. I thought I had nerve damage."
I laughed, "Well it was stupid of you to let her sleep on it. You've got to get into a comfortable position after sex if you're gonna sleep, especially if the person's a cuddler. Nothing worse than getting caught in a choke hold for the next five hours because you were too polite to ask for some space."
Leslie laughed, and Gwen nudged him, "Yeah, dumby, plan ahead of time."
I looked back at Alyssa, who had been mucho quiet for the last few minutes. She had a weird look on her face.
"You okay?" I asked. She nodded.
"Fine. I'm just going to go outside for a minute."
She got up and headed to the front door. I frowned, confused, then I looked at Leslie and Gwen.
"Is it something I said?"
They shrugged. I got up and followed Alyssa out into the cool night air. She was sitting on the front of the car Sean had drove us in, staring down the street. I stood next to her.
"You okay?"
"So..." She said, "You've... had sex before?"
I blinked. "Yeah. Is that bad?"
She looked at me. Ooooooh. "You're a virgin." I said it quietly.
Alyssa nodded. "Well, yeah."
"So?" I crossed my arms, not angrily. "What does it matter? A lot of people don't have sex in high school. In fact, it's probably better that way. Well, I don't know about better, but it's probably, I mean, it's fine..." I was rambling. Someone stop me.
Mercilessly, Alyssa interrupted. "I don't know why I didn't think of that before. You were dating Ben. But it never occurred to me. That's all."
"It was with a guy, Alyssa. It practically means nothing."
"But it is something." She said.
"What does it matter?" I cried, "Jesus, it's not like... I mean...we're not even publicly dating yet... isn't it a little early to be thinking about...?"
Her face turned red. "That's not what I meant!" She said, "I just feel slightly inadequate. Or I'm afraid I will. It's not like... I don't want to have sex with you or anything..."
"Oh, well thanks."
"Erin!" She said. Her eyes were ablaze. "Stop it. This is really hard for me to talk about, and you're not making it any easier."
I sighed and scooted right next to her. "I don't know how to make it easier. All I want to say is: It doesn't matter what I've done with anyone else. And it doesn't matter what you haven't done. I like you how you are, right here, right now, and I don't want anyone else. Okay? And I don't necessarily want sex right now. I just want to be with you. Is that okay?"
She nodded and sniffed. Holy shit, did I make her cry?!
"Alyssa..."
"No, it's not... you're great, Erin."
"Huh?"
She looked at me. Her eyes were shiny, but she smiled. "You're great. You always say the most perfect things. I want... I want us to date publicly. I think we should make the announcement on Friday."
"Woah," I said, "Are you serious?"
She nodded. "If that's okay with you."
I grinned. "That's perfect."
I turned to her and pulled her close to me. We hugged for a good two minutes before we finally re-entered the house. And I could feel it as we walked... a strange sense of excitement sparking between us. Friday. Friday.
Friday.
