Description
Vivian started on the ground. Standing by Bird’s shoulder and taking a rein in each hand. She applied pressure to the mare’s mouth, increasing the intensity until the mare released to the pressure. She instantly released the reins and rubbed Bird’s neck with praise. She repeated the process until Bird was tucking her head as soon as Vivian touched her mouth.

It was at this point that Vivian moved into the saddle but stood still, repeating the process from on top of the little chestnut mare. Bird responded well and soon was as fluid and consistent at the halt as she was on the ground. Vivian cued the mare forward, and Bird lurched into a walk. Vivian asked for the mare’s head, and Bird responded with a high toss. Vivian kicked her forward more and held the pressure steady. Increasing the pressure as Bird fought against it until she was pulsing the reins and her fingers ached. Bird eventually gave in with a dramatic tuck, pressing her chin to the base of her neck and snorting loudly. Vivian praised her but immediately had to cue the mare again as Bird fell out of the headset.

This process of pressure-release-pressure-release carried on with the pair for nearly an hour before Bird was finally moving forward with collection and natural impulsion while carrying herself gracefully. Vivian’s arms ached from asking for the mare’s face earlier on, but the result was well worth the sweat and time. Bird was well rewarded for her progress with a large carrot as Vivian hosed her down in the cross ties. King Ridge’s barn was still very quiet with the lack of staff and even horses, so Vivian was well aware of Desmond’s approaching footsteps.

“How was she?” the scot asked, walking right up to Bird and scratching behind her sweaty ears.
“Gettin’ better,” Vivian replied with a smile, hosing up and down Bird’s clean legs.
“That means you’re barry, m’darlin’” Des cooed at the little mare, lifting up her muzzle and planting a kiss on the slop on her top lip. Vivian chucked and rolled her eyes.
“Don’t you have anything better to do than molest this poor mare?” she laughed.
“Indeed, I do. I actually need to speak with you,” the scot replied, straightening up and rubbing Bird’s forehead. Vivian raised an eyebrow in question.
“We’ve got to get down to actual business now. Hiring,” he explained.
“Oh!” Vivian replied with a grin.
“Aaand… you’ve got to make a decision on your sister,” the scot finished.
“Oh,” Vivian grunted, tossing a begrudging glance at Desmond. He shrugged.
