Description My contribution to a probable host of shiny Microraptor gui that will show up on DA . As I'm sure everyone is aware, recent studies of a new Microraptor fossil suggest that it sported black iridescent plumage (huzzah for melanosomes!), which I thought would work perfectly on black paper.

I studied the plumage of Glossy Starlings and Ravens to get a good feel for the iridescence.

Done in coloured pencils.

I like the naturalism and seamlessness of the face. In a lot of renditions of bird/dinosaurs, the transition between the more "dinosaur" part of the face and the "bird" feathers looks super awkward, but here it really seems to be a whole, living animal.

I am indeed! I'm working on updating this image (basically by painting over the whole thing digitally with my current level of skill and basically redoing the Microraptor from scratch).
