Description I love Paleozoic life just as much as I do dinosaurs, and one of my favourite subjects is fish. This is Zenaspis, a lower Devonian Osteoscracan (Ostracoderm) fish. They were armoured and jawless, likely feeding upon the shallow seafloor. The two lighter coloured plates on the outer edge of the head and between the eyes are cephalic fields, which are assumed to have housed sensory organs of one type or another. In terms of size, they weren't that much bigger than your hand.

I drew from a fossil Zenaspis, as well as other related fish to get ideas on how to do the scales, tail, and dorsal and pectoral fins.

Hope you like

Nice Zenaspis!

Don't suppose you could have a go at Diademaspis? [link]

Thanks! I've always wanted to do more fish, but I'm working on a commission now, among other things. One of these days though, sure . Great looking fossil!

Great! It's good to see someone drawing these creatures! Unfortunately they are often poorly represented...

Thanks! I agree; there's not enough Paleozoic fish art around
