Description Hickory Tussock Moth  - Lophocampa caryae

Lepidoptera

Found this guy at the edge of the woods feeding on a walnut tree leaf...

These caterpillars are known to feed on leaves of ash, oak, hickory, maple, elm, and other trees; also hops, Virginia creeper, raspberry, rose, sumac, and blueberry.  They acquire chemical defenses from the toxicity of their host plants.  This is why they are believed to have their bold black and white warning coloration.

What kind of butterfly do they become?

WanderingMogwai In reply to photonutz [2015-11-13 16:19:29 +0000 UTC]

They don't become a butterfly.  They become a moth.  Fuzzy caterpillars generally only become moths.
  It's a rule of thumb

Then where is the photo of it as a moth?

I haven't encountered one yet.  The caterpillar in and of itself is a great find...
