Description When I was ver young an elderly neighborhood woman used to babysit me.  She livedin an apartment above a neighbor's garage.  I was only 3 or 4 years old but I can remember she used to call me 'Ladybug'.  Although she made me feel like a one of a kind there are about 150 species of ladybugs in the United States.

I've never seen a larva before, or at least, I've never known I was looking at a ladybug larva. I've seen several different varieties of ladybug, though!

There are quite a few.  Some are native and some are invasive.  I can never remember which are which tho.

If you can't remember, I'm doomed. lol I didn't even know some were invasive.

I have seen ladybugs for sale at garden centers, to control aphids. I've wondered if they were actually good for the ecosystem or if they were local species. And, as I typed, I realized that somewhere there are ladybug "farms."

The problem with kits like that is that, long story short, they fly away as soon as you release them.  It's true!  Such a rip off!

I wondered about that! I actually read an article that said the trick was to put them in their new tree at night when it was cool and they would stay put. By morning, when they flew off, the new tree would smell like home and they would return.

I was dubious, lol.

As you should have been.  They package and ship the lady bugs chilled to keep them dormant.  The problem then is that their natural instinct is that after waking up from dormancy to migrate.  So, when you put them in your garden and they warm up they just fly away!  lol

I can kind of see the classic black polka-dots on the body segments.

If I didn't know what it is I don't think I'd ever guess.

Beautiful shot! It almost looks like it is painted ceramic!!! Such a gorgeous mottled pattern. I can also see how the name ladybug would find you, but you will always be Gizmo to me!
