Description I've got a little surprise planned for spring - it's a little minicomic in three parts! My sister helped write it!

It features one of these little muffinbutts, Chansey. This one works for the Kanto Garda, hence the triskele on her hat. I've been playing around with their design - especially how people like to think that they're rather bird-like, so this one has a beaky little mouth and the species as a whole has feathers that grow even fluffier as they evolve.

Chansey in the Burning Bridges world are one of the few pokemon that go to university, as government policy awards them nursing scholarships automatically due to their species. Many other pokemon have protested against this scheme, since it's... well... racist. But there's no denying Chansey are biologically best-adapted to careers in medicine, and the scheme has stayed that way for decades.

The bestselling memoir 'I know why the caged Chansey sings' is based on the life of a chansey forced to attend nursing school as it was the only way she could get a job. It's hailed as a modern classic, celebrating the inherent racism in the Kantonese university system.

Carl the Mr Mime attended psychology school at university as well, thanks to a little nepotism - you can see him on page 7.

She's adorable! And that sounds like a book I would like to read! o.o

It's a very interesting approach you've picked for your secondary story. (The primary being about Moira and Donny.) One that I find so intricate and want to know so much more about. <3

Damn, I don't know what I love more, the design or the story! You have wonderful ideas, I really enjoy the take that you have on the PokΓ©mon world. It's a great mix of the more adult world that older fans want while still having the charm of the PokΓ©mon games. This design is fantastic, I've never found a Chansey design that I like, so I hope that you show off a design for Blissy and Happiny.

Donahue now has some real competition for the best fluffy butt out there!

Gosh, thank you! c: I really do mean it - this just made me incredibly happy! I really wanted to make a world that was mature but never dark - it should respect the intelligence of its readers, but never feel like it was relying of some sort of 'dark and edgy' shock factor to draw the readers in - the fact that you noticed is amazing! Thank you so much!

It's a parody of a book a friend of mine famously hates. xD We had to do it for school and most of us didn't complain, but he wrote in to the staff saying it was the whiniest book he'd ever read.

What an adorable fluffypuffin! I really love your designs, Nic. And the idea as birdlike is so cool.

My first ever shiny card was a Chansey, and I loooved it. I still like using them in the games occasionally. (See: setting Zmey on people in double battles paired with either Blissey or Cassiopeia the Gardevoir with Telepathy!)

It's her fluffy muffinbutt. OvO Thank yoou!!

Oh gosh, I can't even remember my first holographic card - me and Sissy always fought over Machamp, though. Whoever got him in their deck usually won.

Zmey and Chansey would be a terrifying duo! O: And Cassiopeia's such an awesome name! Do you use other mythological names?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

frothycrema In reply to wanlingnic [2013-03-28 07:39:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, mostly for Will's team. Jynx is Freja/Freya, his Bronzong is Demeter (because they're meant to have to do with harvests), Grumpig is Hen Wen (less mythological) xD, Xatu is Nascha, and Viviane the Slowbro. I try to go with names that suit things the trainers are interested in. c; (Emili's names for all of Lance's dragons are fantastic.) Steven's are gradually gaining names based on geology and figures from it.

Zmey and Smok are both based on Slavic dragons. (One of Smok's offspring, whose known as Little-Big informally, because he's a chunky but cautious Deino, and is small compared to Smok and his mother, of course) is Balaur, now.

I'm so slow though. It takes me ages to decide on names. o uo

It's funny, Maya Angelou (author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) spoke at my university a moth ago today. She's quite charismatic and funny in person.

Maya Angelou? D: Really? That's so amazing! Did you read her book? Oh gosh, I'm very very jealous. c:

You know, a friend of mine famously hates her, though. He wrote a whole blog post dissecting what was wrong about the novel. It's hilarious but vulgar if you want to read it! xD

The line to get in was out the door, two blocks down the road. About a hundred people ended up having to sit outside and watch on a projector screen because the building filled up so fast.

I read her book, yes, it was back-ordered at our local bookstores when word got out that she was coming. Although I got the impression from it that there was a lot of humor that was lost in translation from her delivery to the written medium. A shame, like I mentioned she's really quite funny in person.

XD Ahaha, yeah there will always be someone who has something negative to say. Was his beef with the content or the delivery?

this made me think of something. as a high-schooler, a lot of people recommend that you don't get a degree in liberal arts and instead do something that's "practical". is there anything like that in burning bridges? the only pokemon predisposed to art that i can think of is smeargle, so are there great pokemon artists that aren't smeargle??? sorry for the weird question

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wanlingnic In reply to PeachWisteria-chii [2013-03-27 22:46:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh GOD, sing all my feels. *hugs* Yup, I remember that happening to me as I graduated high school. c: You too?

In the Burning Bridges verse, school is free until the age of 10, that's when poor humans and most pokemon kids drop out of school and try to make money by battling in the league. A trainer's career can be both tiringly brutal and glamorously glorious (league success usually comes with endorsement deals and lots of prize money, but few teams get that far) - kids who do have money to continue schooling are encouraged to do so, and a trainer's life is treated like an art degree. Even if it's what you love, and even if you feel you could be really good at it, everyone believes it won't be 'practical' and you can't earn much from it.

what kind of animal would a chansey be?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wanlingnic In reply to Velink [2013-03-26 23:08:08 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. D: I guess a chansey's kind of a bird and a kangaroo and a ball of fluff and a mammal?

I never really liked associating them with any specific animal - why limit yourself? Also, this may just be me, but some people who do it wind up looking really really pretentious: "Oh yes! Primeape's a monkey so I shall draw it as a recoloured version of Papio ursinus! Everyone will think I'm so clever!!!"
