Let me first say this. I don't care that it's Nintendo's property and they're allowed to block whatever they want. What I care about is Metroid getting a proper 30th Anniversary. And they shot that right out of the sky.

For about six years I'd been watching and waiting as Another Metroid 2 Remake was being created by a clear happy-to-create FOR NO PROFIT fan of the series. I played one of the original demos, I watched him make the Zeta and Omega Metroids in the videos he put up, I waited with bated breath for this, quite frankly, official-quality title. And of what? of 2. The game that EVERYONE had been wanting a remake of FOREVER. It was the ONLY game that hadn't been remade that needed it for the main games to have a smooth coherent transition between each other. The only one. And, from the demo, it played incredibly. It was 2 but bigger and better in every way, shape, and form. Better detail than Zero Mission, amazing music, the enemies actually looking like they did in the instruction manuals. Throw in things from Fusion to tie it in even more coherently with the rest of the series and I can say that AM2R looked like arguably the best sidescroller there was (though the same can be said of all the sidescrollers I guess).

And it finally, FINALLY, came out. In the same month that Federation Force, the little "play-with-your-friends" title that looked like one of the most disappointing things from the franchise after years of nothing was to come out, AM2R was released. And people were thrilled.

And then it stopped.

A lawyer or someone dealing with the law of the name Brian Stiffen on behalf of Nintendo issued a DMCA on the project only about a day after it was out and all download links were taken off of Metroid sites and the creator's site.

It was heartbreaking. A game from a fan that was made out of passion for the franchise, that was very well known and not shut down at all throughout its production, one that was perfect for the 30th anniversary, axed. People can claim all they want that they're doing a favor for it by not issuing a Cease and Desist, but no. Anyone with a brain knows that that's shit. What would be doing it a favor would be giving the fangame a seal of approval by Nintendo. It'd be putting it up on an E-Shop or something. Even if it's laziness in Capcom's case, they backed Mega Man x Street Fighter, a fan made game. Nintendo? Just they're usual dickish business selves. And it's, in my eyes, a travesty for the franchise.
