Description
This is probably the most "expressive" part of my Resident Evil 2 animation when it comes to emoting facial features. I mean the whole thing's full of expressive expressions, but to animate THIS character going through THESE faces was just...well it was hell. All those lines and shading and stretched muscle tissues and everything. Keeping track of the teeth and eyes. It was the most complex character I have ever animated, at least up to this point. But god it turned out so good. This was one of the main things I was dead-set on making for the scene. You see in the original version of Resident Evil 2 Birkin basically just pops in, kills Annette, and jumps away. Yeah it's a creepy "look-who's-here" moment, but story-wise...it just always seemed kind of weird to me. Much more prefer Birkin pausing for a moment in Darkside when he realizes who Annette is. So I wanted to give more of an actual reason for his jumping away. Cause he could've just as easily proceeded to attack Claire in the original version of the scene. It took a lot of work and splicing around sound effects and everything to get it to go with the audio of the cutscene and extended the scene a bit from what it originally was in the game, but it looks incredible to me now that it's finished. You can literally see the human side of Birkin wrestling with his G-self at what he's done to his wife before leaping away in his confliction.
