Description Today's pinup is another in the Airbrushed Propaganda Pinup Poster series featuring Cristina in this Salute to the Army Air Force Airmen! Officially established in March of 1942, the newly named Army Air Force (formerly Army Air Corps since 1926) was the predecessor of the modern US Air Force. During World War 2, the Army Air Force had over 2 million personnel, nearly 80,000 aircraft, and over 1,500 airfields worldwide. The sheer size of the USAAF during World War 2 made it nearly an independent branch of the military yet it was still a component of the US Army. The USAAF had 15 different designation types for their aircraft (such as B for bomber, P for pursuit, C for cargo, etc) with some of the most famous aircraft in all of aviation history. 16 different Air Forces (1st Air Force - 15th Air Force, and 20th Air Force) held numerous units, wings, groups, and squadrons making up the structure of the Army Air Force. For example, the 323rd Bomb Squadron was part of the 91st bomb Group in the 1st Combat Bombardment Wing in the Eighth Air Force in the overall Army Air Force. The Army Air Force was eventually split from the US Army into its own branch in 1947 officially becoming the US Air Force.

At that time it was a branch of the army and was known as the Air Corps (French, pronounced core)
