Look at the side below '+fav this', 'groups' etc and you'll see a bracket called details (on mobile devices it's found under the 'i') - copy the code listed under "Thumb" and paste it in fx your journal, then it should work unless dA has changed something.

This link might be helpful too - just remember to read the description too: sweetduke.deviantart.com/art/H…

So do you think you can be goth without listening to all the music?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WargusEstor In reply to AntlerQueen [2014-06-05 17:03:07 +0000 UTC]

I believe in listening to what I like regardless of genre, but still acknowledge the bands that helped shaping the subculture. That said, I do like Sisters of Mercy, The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees I also see goth as a lifestyle rather than just music or fashion.

But Goth has nothing to do with the 70s at all.

If you really want real goth, then read Edgar Allen Poe's works. Also take a look at those novels; Dracula and Frankenstein.

Goth was always a look back at the Gothic cathedrals, the gargoyles, the dark-romantic literature.

I refuse to aknowledge the crappy 70s punk movement. The bands suck, the ideas suck, everything sucks.

But it sucks even more that this is what people think Goth is. They believe the lies.

Personally I've already read the literature you mention (as well as I've read Byrons poems, "The Castle of Ortranto" and "Wuthering Heights" just to mention a few) and yes much of it has indeed influenced the gothic subculture, and I agree that loads of the gothic aesthetic pull inspiration from haunted graveyards and such; but that doesn't change that the modern goth movement is often bundled up with the 70's punk movement simply because they began showing up at the same time in a lot of the same venues (partly also because most average people didn't know the distinctions).

Personally I am mostly into corsets, frilly skirts and absinthe by candlelight, rather than safety-pins and shredded fishnet; I love classical art and old buildings, I love ghost stories, vampires and folklore. I listen to Vivaldi, Beethoven and Grieg, as well as occasionally Sisters of Mercy or The Cure; high heavens forbid, I even dabble in certain genres of metal.

I even smile sometimes *puts tongue firmly in cheek*

That being said, I guess we can agree that the gothic aesthetic, regardless of the medium it's presented through is a pretty fabulous one.

I dont identify with the modernΒ  uh.... "goth" movement.Β  I'm a Goth. But I will never think of that 70s shit as anything but more trendy fads and fake crap.

*Shrugs* To each their own as they say, I am not going to judge those who prefer the 1970's goth look to those who prefer the look of the 1870's as long as they're happy with their own aesthetic. Thanks for the inputs though.

Ditto. Awesome reply, thanks. I've been wonder cause I'm currently kinda submerged into the subculture. Siouxsie sioux rocks.

what's Goth? all I know it was a group of people in the old past :/

DinowCookie In reply to legendofspyroXcynder [2014-04-25 19:43:33 +0000 UTC]

the essence of goth lies within seeing beauty in things that the majority of people considers beautiful, but also seeing beauty in other things; dark things or extraordinary things

goths are mostly associated with wearing black clothes, liking metal music, liking dark poetry etc., but those are just stereotypes goths don't HAVE to be into those things to be goth
