Description
You sat on a boulder overlooking the crystal clear lake, silent as ever. You slept surprisingly well that night; grief had worn you thin. You were intent on listening to Aragorn’s orders now that morning had risen. “We cross the lake at nightfall. Hide the boats and continue on foot.”
Aragorn was pacing, making sure everything was in check. You turned your body to the side, just so you could watch the conversation out of the corner of your tired eyes. “We approach Mordor from the North.” He muttered, kicking around the branches in the fire.
“Oh, yes? Just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil, an impassible labyrinth of razor-sharp rocks!” Gimli pointed a stick at Aragorn. “And after that, it gets even better! Festering, stinking marshland as far as the eye can see.” You scoffed.
Pippin looked around, startled at what the Dwarf offered to say. “That is our road. I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master Dwarf.” Gimli growled, outraged at what Aragorn had said. “Enough, Gimli.” You jumped down from your perch.
“Aragorn is right. You should rest.” Your eyes were dead set on Gimli, and he proved uncomfortable under your intense stare. He grunted and moved away to rest in peace. “We should leave now.” Legolas’s voice dragged you over to their conversation, watching.
Aragorn stared at him intently. “No. Orcs patrol the Eastern shore. We must wait for cover of darkness.” He answered. “It is not the Eastern shore that worries me…” Legolas muttered. “A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind.”
You narrowed your eyes at your fellow Elf; the grief of Walstow must have distracted you from feeling these feelings of danger. “Something draws near. I can feel it.” You cocked your head at them, but walked away, figuring it was none of your concern for the time being.
“Recover strength? Pay no heed to that, young Hobbit.” Gimli sneered. You sat across from him, beside Pippin, raising your eyebrows in interest. Merry looked at everyone as he spoke, “Where’s Frodo?” You immediately looked to where the Hobbit should be.
You noticed that Boromir as well was missing from the group. You cast Aragorn and Legolas a worried glare as Aragorn took a step forward. “I will go fetch them.” He hurried off into the forest. You motioned for Legolas to come sit beside you, to which he gladly did.
Pippin was staring at the both of you in wonder, while Gimli just spat. “What? Do we smell?” You pouted, crossing your arms across your chest. The Dwarf stared at you straight in the eyes. “Not yet, but it would be best if you’d stop multiplying and die out.”
A sly smirk grew on your face as you giggled. “So much hostility towards a man who’s height is shorter than my own.” You teased. Legolas watched you both in amusement, while Pippin tried his hardest not to laugh. “Excuse you?” Gimli asked, outraged.
You grinned tenfold at how displeased Gimli was. “Indeed, I only speak truth. As for multiplying…” You glanced at Legolas with a wicked smirk. “I cannot be safe to say that will cease.” Legolas’s face lit up, trying to remain at a straight posture.
Pippin’s finally started to laugh hard, falling over onto his back. You laughed too, patting Legolas on the back. “I’m joking! Joking! You must learn to take a joke, Gimli.” You paused, a sincere smile on your face. “You’re not so bad for a stinky Dwarf.”
Gimli tried to hide a soft smile as he scoffed, getting up. “And you are not so bad for a disgustingly hideous Elf.” With that, the Dwarf dismissed himself to rest. You smiled, laying back to stare at the clouded sky. “My lady?”
You looked over at Samwise, who you smiled to, sitting up. You grew so very fond of all the Hobbits on the journey. “Yes, Sam?” He extended a hand, and in it was a piece of bread. “I saved this for you. You have avoided eating all night and day…” Sam seemed nervous.
Samwise was clearly concerned for your safety, but he was scared to show it. You smiled bigger and took the bread. “Thank you, Master Sam. It means a lot.” He smiled gently and sat down, conversing with the Hobbits as you ate.
A change in the air had you frozen to the ground, eyes casting side to side. Legolas had already picked up on what lay in the shadows, standing up. You followed suit, intently straining your senses. “Orcs!” He hissed.
Immediately everyone panicked, looking around wildly. “Aragorn!” You gasped, looking at Legolas in fear. “Come, Gimli.” Legolas urged. Before you could order the Hobbits to do anything, they had disappeared. You whispered profanities as you gave chase after the Elf and Dwarf.
You ran up the small hill towards where you sensed the danger most prominent. Legolas and Gimli were hot on your heels. The sound of swords clanking was your indication that Aragorn was fighting with Orcs. You quickly pounced under an old, rock building and spotted Aragorn.
You unsheathed your sword and ran forward, kicking an Orc that Legolas had shot out of the way. Your blade slashed into an Orc’s stomach. You twirled, withdrawing your sword as you ducked out of the way of another.
Aragorn ran off once we proved we could handle the situation. Legolas continued shooting arrows, Gimli continued axing down Orcs, and you were busy hastily mutilating the foul beasts with your sword. Orcs were flooding around you.
You had to admire Legolas as he twisted and turned, gracefully using his arrows to stab into the eyes of the Orcs. You never thought murder was attractive until you saw a true Elf at work. You smirked as you punched another creature in the face, twirling around to back-stab an Orc in the throat.
Gimli was doing wonders bringing down Orcs; despite being him short and large. As you were distracted by the way your comrades fought, you flinched at a searing pain flying up your thigh. You pounced away, locking your blade into its neck.
An alarming hiss left your throat as you limped away, pushing away at the Orcs. You ignored the pain as you stabbed an Orc in the gut, dodging a hit from a blade. You perked up at the sound of a blow. “The horn of Gondor!” Legolas gasped.
“Boromir!” Aragorn yelled, running forward and out of your view once again. “Aragorn, come back!” You yelped. Before you could help, more Orcs surrounded you. You growled and twirled, punching and stabbing as much as possible.
Most of the Orcs raced towards the sound of the horn. You met eyes with Gimli in a fit of rage as you let out a battle cry, slashing down many Orcs. Time passed slowly as you, Legolas, and Gimli killed all enemy Orc around and made fast for where Aragorn had disappeared.
You hustled down the hills, panting heavily as you forced your sword back into its scabbard. Legolas was in front of you, and you were trailing beside Gimli, hoping he hadn’t noticed your limping. The Dwarf glared at you, gesturing towards your leg.
“Leave it be.” You whispered as you pounced down, stopping to a halt. You hadn’t believed what you stared upon. Grief found its way into your heart once again as you watched Aragorn bitterly stand up from Boromir’s body, eyes grave.
You felt tears prick your eyes, but dare not let them fall. The look in Aragorn’s eyes had you limping forward, leaning down to kiss Boromir’s forehead as well. “We should give him a proper funeral.” You whispered.
Aragorn glanced down at you with a nod, and with the help of everyone he was carried to the shores. Boromir was placed into a boat with his hands gracefully encircling the hilt of his sword. With silence Aragorn pushed him into the lake and watched as the boat fell down the waterfall, into the watery abyss.
“Hurry! Frodo and Sam have reached the Eastern shore!” Legolas called, starting to push a boat into the water. You stood there, closing your eyes. There was nothing but silence. “You mean not to follow them.” Legolas whispered.
While the silence dragged on, you ripped apart of cloth and wrapped it around your bloody wound, wincing in pain. A low hiss left your lips, catching the attention of Legolas. You had yet to see him so concerned. You gestured him away, playing off like you weren’t in pain.
Aragorn watched as the shadows of Frodo and Sam faded into the trees across the lake. “Frodo’s fate is no longer in our hands.” He whispered. You looked downcast. Had you all failed? There was now bitterness burning your throat.
You all walked up to Aragorn, guilt in your eyes. “Then it has all been in vain. The Fellowship has failed.” You flinched at the Dwarf’s words. “Even we could do nothing but whisk in the wind like leaves.” You whispered.
Mixed eyes watched as Aragorn walked over, placing a hand on your shoulder, as well as Gimli’s. “Not if we hold true to each other.” His eyes met each of you with determination. “We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death.” You stiffended at his words.
“Not while we have strength left.” Aragorn turned around, preparing for the journey ahead. “Leave all that can be spared behind. We travel light. Let us hunt some Orc.” The three of you all met eye contact, Gimli growling with a grin.
Legolas let a smile lit his face as you laughed, punching the air in excitement. “The Fellowship shall never cease until they have our heads!” You yelped, running after Aragorn. You had forgotten about the pain in your leg for now; for a new light paved your path. You were going to do everything in your power to rescue Pippin and Merry.
