I don't care what fan-girls think of Akainu. Oda knows how to make a villain and, next to Blackbeard, you can't help but admire this guy as much as you dislike him. I can't wait until Oda gives Akainu a back-story - nothing is ever cut and dry with villains.

Akainu, like most of the devil fruit users, has a personality that matches his ability: destroyer, absolute and ruthless. For Oda, Sakazuki must be hated so much by the readers and there wasn't any better choice than making him kill a character who is loved by most of the One Piece fans: Ace.
However, don't forget that if it wasn't Akainu to kill Ace, Kizaru would have as well, so Akainu is not the only one ruthless and cruel marine here
anyway as for Sakazuki Back story- maybe you should check out One Piece Z, coming out this december in Japan, for some story of the 3 admirals may be told in the movie

Yeah, that is true... never shows an interest in anything though.
However, even though his personality is relevant to his ability, I've always picture Akainu as someone who once believed in moral justice - only to get back stabbed because of it and become the absolute justice bringer that he is in the firm belief that only the World Gov't can bring peace.
