Description Portrait scenery of Derry's Irish Republican side (ie Free Derry) as seen from the old walls in the town centre. A place that I was very pleasantly surprised with coming from Belfast because I felt it had a lot more character and history (whereas most of Belfast's historical landmarks were destroyed during WWII and later domestic terrorism).

Still some tension I noticed in Derry nowadays between the UK loyalists and Irish separatists, but surprisingly very safe for tourists as the (now admittedly faded) conflict is limited between the extremists and the "establishment" like police authorities.

That's what I thought before going there, but the name of the city seems to be a hotly contested issue because I've been told the Irish Republicans who want to separate from the UK don't like the prefix London, so they just refer to it as Derry. I think the Southern Irish also refer to it as Derry on road signs and such, whereas the Northern Irish UK loyalists prefer calling it Londonderry.

oh.. that's confused! I've been there many years ago and thought it was lovely! Still, it's called Londonderry, right, since it is in N.Ireland...?

Yeah it is a bit confusing There is still no clear answer as to what it is called. On Google Maps, it's marked Londonderry / Derry, and its official name is Londonderry, but in every day conversation I think it's most commonly referred to as Derry, if only because the name is shorter. I guess a good analogy would be that we say China instead of the official name People's Republic of China.

Polarising filter?

Yah, if memory serves, I used a circular polarizer from B+W. Is is that easy to tell? Before this trip I was always accustomed to using a standard UV filter.

The picture just looks, better. So I assumed either a filter or a few digital enhancements.

Love your camera I'm just getting started with DSLRs. The lenses are so expensive!

Thanks If you're just 17, I would say you have a leg up on photography. Keep at it, the camera I have (at least by my standards) is expensive, but it's a real joy working with it. Except for the iMac, my camera is one of the only gadgets I'm willing to splurge on. Screw the smartphones or large screen TV's, having a nice camera to capture one's adventures & experiences in life I feel go a lot further than that.
