PERSONALITY
At first glance Emelisse might appear as a young, innocent mare, but she’s far from it. She uses her tired look to come across as mellow and unthreatening. While in reality her mind is as quick and sharp as the blade she’ll pull on you. She’s good at holding up appearances, lying comes easy to her as part of her trade. She’ll act cute, charming and social enough in the right company, but if she’s being kind to you it’s probably because she’s using you.
It’s everyone for themselves out there and if you’re not smart enough to realize you’re being tricked, then that’s too bad. Because of this mind-set, Emelisse is independent, emotionally distant and fiercely distrusting of anyone, especially when they’re being kind to her. She’s determined, enduring and has a healthy dose of courage, but she’s also impulsive and somewhat capricious. She has a dark sense of humour and can sometimes slip into nihilism because she has lost a lot.
Emelisse is inventive, intelligent and quick to learn. She likes to manipulate people, feeling proud when she’s cunningly outsmarting others. She’s irresponsible in the sense that she cares little for consequences. She’s poised and patient, until her emotions get the best of her and she loses her temper. Her reaction to fear or insecurity is anger, she’s also a pretty mean drunk.
She’s somewhat lonely, though she won’t ever admit it. As a child she started to name the plants she was taking care off and even now she feels a deep appreciation towards the beauty of nature, preferring the company of animals over people that could backstab her.
Likes:
• Freedom
• Music, all of it
• Plants and animals
• Setting up people/manipulating them
Dislikes:
• Sleeping
• Being stuck in one place (or inside her body during sleep paralyzes)
• Raiders, slave traders, any who think themselves superior
• Any form of precipitation
Drive: To be free (and maybe find some peace)

Emelisse was born at the edge of Skeldr Town during a massive thunderstorm in June. Her exhausted mother was ecstatic and couldn’t stop crying as she praised Kaia and Alya for this gift. There was no father, for Emelisse’s mother, Alijt, had broken two of the Onean laws. Alijt had lost her family due to sickness and she’d found brief comfort with a stallion who had no interest in marrying her. The pregnant mare then isolated herself in an attempt to keep her growing form hidden, knowing that the Stone Circle would ask of her to end it if they knew.
Emelisse spends her first weeks completely indoors, not allowed outside the safety of the small house. She learned quickly to be quiet, careful and patient as her doting mother showered her with attention. There was a fear of the world beyond the threshold, a distrust towards other horses, and for good reason. When the Circle learned of Alijt’s disrespect they decided to show no mercy.
Alijt and her daughter were lifted from their beds at the crack of dawn, bound in chains and thrown into a cart with a couple of others to be sold as slaves in Valore. Alijt tried desperately to fight the traders that hurt her precious child and the mare is beaten until she stops moving. A terrified Emelisse watches all of this in horror, confusion and anger.
The hot, stuffy and dark cart didn’t get too far down the road though, before it was attacked by Vindicators. The ambush was quick and precise, freeing the Onean horses and leading them away. At the sight of the stallion that hurt her mother, Emelisse starts to kick at the unconscious form until she’s dragged away. Alijt is hurt and limping badly, slowing down the group immensely, so they’re left behind at the Kingfisher Inn.
They end up staying at the Inn for several years, working for Ike to earn their keep. Emelisse adjusts quickly as she grows up. She proves to be intelligent and a fast learner as she listens to stories of patrons, learning to read and write a little. She sucks up the practical knowledge of herbs, how to start a fire from scratch and anything else anyone is willing to teach her. She loves to wander out in the forest all by herself, for she never did get used to company. Sure she can hold a smile for the customers, but there’s always a distance between her and everyone else.
Vindicators are a regular sight at the Inn and Emelisse and her mother end up staying at the Bunker for a while as well. Emelisse learns to defend herself and claims her own hidden dagger. But she doesn’t like the Bunker much, it’s crowded and they’re not allowed to roam the area freely. Emelisse also witnesses a lot of hardships. Vindicators that return wounded, disorientated slaves they smuggled from Eithne, accompanied by horrible stories of abuse.
The Vindicators also make it known that the Cult of Digend is basically pure evil. Emelisse can’t help but feel curiosity towards a god build on luck and her religious mother lets her, quietly hoping the teenager will come around and start worshipping Kaia and Alya instead, like she should. Eventually Emelisse convinces her mother to go back to the Kingfisher Inn again.
Her world changes when she meets a small family group of bards, on their way to the Wordsmith Gathering. They share so many wonderful stories and songs about Hireath and their travels that it leaves Emelisse entranced. It also doesn’t hurt that one of the young stallions in the group sings her a love song. She practices music with them, completely fascinated with each instrument. Out of kindness they gift her a mandolin, engraved with a metal plate picturing a moth. They tell her about Digend in a positive way, separating the god of change from its cult.
The traveling bards leave with the promise to return and Emelisse practices her voice and instrument feverishly, intent to impress them. She neglects her work at the inn and gets into small fights with her mother. Emelisse starts to threaten that she’ll leave, travel the land as a bard herself. Alijt still adores her daughter and desperately wants to stay close to her, so the fights usually end with the mare giving in.
When the traveling bards return they are amused and impressed with Emelisse’s progress and eagerly invite her and her mother along. Alijt hesitates, but follows her daughter. Emelisse manifested a crush on the stallion that sung her the love song and they fall head over hooves into puppy love. She travels, she learns, she performs and her life seems absolutely perfect for a while. But it didn’t last long enough.
The small group travels north into Onea, which turned out to be a mistake. Emelisse is just dozing off when Raiders enter their little campsite at night. There’s a tense standoff as the bards try to explain they just want to bring their music to the War-Forged people. The Raiders are in a bad mood though, eyeing the symbols of Digend, they decide to arrest the group. Emelisse watches in horror as her foolish boyfriend takes a stand in front of her, driving his blade into the nearest Raider. The trained fighter retaliates and strikes the young stallion down with just one blow, ending his life without a word.
Chaos ensues and somewhere in the panicked frenzy Emelisse manages to flee the scene with her mother. They are lucky to get away, but Emelisse’s pain turns into a sobering fury. She lays awake at night thinking of what she could’ve done to prevent the attack, eventually falling asleep dreaming of ways to kill that Raider. The two travel south again, towards the Kingfisher Inn, as good a rendevous point as any. They move slow due to Alijt’s limp and out of frustration they get into fights again.
One night they seek shelter in a shallow cave, hiding from the relentless rain. Emelisse dozes off but is woken by a low rumbling sound. Mud and stone rain down as the earth shifts and part of the hillside slips out of place. Emelisse only suffers some scrapes and bruises, but she finds her mother’s body mangled and buried beneath rock and dirt. The mare is barely alive, drifting in and out of consciousness because of the pain. Terrified and delirious Alijt mumbles prayers of forgiveness and asks the gods to look after her daughter.
Emelisse knows there will be no answer and after futile attempts to free her mother she decides to do the merciful thing. She kills her mother. Emelisse buries the body completely, her eyes swimming with hot tears before she wanders off again. She doesn’t sleep for several days, afraid something terrible will happen again. She’s plagued by the thought that she didn’t kill her mother out of mercy, but out of resentment, that she was relieved to do it. It was so easy to take her life, while instead Emelisse wanted to take the life of the ones that hurt her so. When eventually her body crashes down she has horrible nightmares and sleep paralyzes. The fear of sleep manifests as insomnia.
Emelisse is determined not to give up on it all though. She was lucky enough to survive all of this, she was lucky enough her mandolin survived all of this. The young mare used to merely consider Digend, but by now, she starts to accept that this god might be guiding her. Emelisse takes to traveling all across Sirith and Sedo, visiting the Wordsmith Gathering each year and finding strength in her music. She keeps to herself, social enough to function in her line of work, making sure she has the right connections, but otherwise emotionally distant.
During the Wordsmith Gathering of 1701 Emelisse was late to the party and didn’t witness Digend ACTUALLY RISING. HOLY. SHIT. She’s heard whispers of Asylon and is eager to get into the city of her god. She doesn't own a home there, but the city is still a base for her to return to and meet up with other followers. Emelisse becomes a Missionary and cautiously spreads the word of her new God in the form of song to anyone who will listen.
