Description My entry to The Art Institutes' yearly contest "Life is Better with Art in it" poster design contest.

I have spent -way- too long on this, but overall I love how it came out. I put my heart and soul into this, and now can only hope that it at least wins SOMETHING.

Linked here from your sis's post on fb. Last time I saw you, you were just a kid! I didn't know you were into art. This looks amazing! Great job!

Well, I appreciate you taking a look at my work. c: I'm afraid I really don't know who you are though, would I remember you? (Alyse has had so many friends over the years, I only sorta remember some of them)

You're sis and I hung out a bit during high school. So it's been a spell. Plus, I only came over a few times - here and there. You might have been better acquainted with a friend I had (at the time), his name's Sean Chiles.

Damn... I'm really sorry, but I really don't remember either of you. :/ I must have been really young at the time. Either way, it's nice to know that you remember me!

No need! If a creation of this caliber were to go without praise, I'd shun the entire community and myself.

I know, but i don't want to go to any of them XD I think i'm going to UCF. only florida university with a computer animation major. the art institutes aren't nationally accredited though :/

No, but they are regionally accredited. Which is actually better than nationally.

MY GOSH, MORF!

This is absolutely beautiful! Breath-taking, fantastic and simply the best art that I think I've seen from you! The lighting is perfect at setting a very soft but vibrant mood with the differing hues of blue. It accentuates the waves in the hair perfectly, and the detail on the wings. THE WINGS! I would be surprised if you did not get some kind of recognition for this work, and it is very obvious that you put so much of who you are (your style as an artist, etc.) into this.

Again fantastic and 1000000000 + points of absolute awesome! It makes me wonder what the meaning of wings as headphones really is...

waterwish In reply to Sakura-Phoenix [2011-02-04 21:36:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Sakura. <33

I would have to agree that its my best so far (Also probably the most time-consuming, hence the month-long break I took from posting anything!). The wings took forever! I probably spent longer on the wings than any other part of this. e_e I am so glad they came out the way they did though. I was really hoping to keep at least some form of my own style in this (Though lately I'm seeing so many inconsistencies in my 'style', that I'm doubting its existence. Haha.), so I'm glad you at least see some. C:

The wings are meant to symbolize the freedom and liberation from the physical world that art gives to people (As birds in literature are often used to symbolize freedom). I'm hoping the judges pick up on that. e_E;

Thank you very much. C:

Sakura-Phoenix In reply to waterwish [2011-02-05 16:56:28 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean as far as inconsistencies go. It's so infrequent that I have time/motivation to do art anymore, that each drawing changes in between doing them! -o-;; However, I would almost define a "constantly changing style" as a style It reflects your personality; your adaptability, your impressionistic and flowing art that modifies itself without even realizing it!

But oooo....I do enjoy that symbolism there I hope the judges pick up on it too! The picture is filled with all sorts of subtle suggestions ^^

waterwish In reply to Sakura-Phoenix [2011-02-06 18:35:59 +0000 UTC]

I would have to agree with you. D: I don't draw nearly as often as I should, (aside from little in-class doodles) so my style changes so drastically from one piece to the next. Either that, or my memory is so bad that I can't REMEMBER my style, so I basically invent a new one every time I draw something. Haha (I'm really hoping its not that...).

That's what I was going for. c: Thanks Sakura.

:U

Hmmm my god but this is so beautiful. Your shading and lighting are absolutely gorgeous: it's consistent and attractive, going from bright up above to this murky blackness at the bottom. Nicely done with that. The details are pretty swell too, especially her hair. These things are all so well-honed that the picture looks like a 3D render in places! The curve of the tattoo is very interesting, I really like how smoothly it "fits" against her jaw. How did you do that? Something with a perspective-type-filter-thing, or did you airbrush it like that by hand? It looks utterly brilliant. <3

I honestly don't have any critique for the picture! The only thing I'd have to say is that it doesn't exactly get the idea of "art" as well as it should... "music", perhaps, because of the headphones. But it IS art in itself, so perhaps I'm just expecting something stereotypical like paintbrushes or Jackson Pollock splatters. Hahaha...

Overall though, fantastic job here, the work you put into it really shines. If anything, you win a humble round of applause from me. Bravo!!

waterwish In reply to Ribbontail [2011-02-04 21:31:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much Ribbon. c: Such complements from you mean a lot to me. <3 For the tattoo, I just used a henna brush then just warped it to "wrap around" her skin. It wasn't very difficult, but I'm glad I added it (The skin was very bare without it).

I would have to agree. The contest prompt is incredibly vague, and quite frankly it kind of sucks (It could be worded far much better). But, its what I had to fit this to. I know its not so 'artsy', but that was kind of what I was going for. The whole idea behind my entry was that there are forms of art OTHER than the traditional painting and drawing. I figured music was the best idea, since that's the second easiest form of 'art' that people seem to recognize. Hopefully my outlandish idea will score me -some- points in the contest. XD

Thank you so much! A Ribbon applause is one of the highest forms of compliments ever. <3

Ribbontail In reply to waterwish [2011-02-05 19:37:37 +0000 UTC]

OH. OH MY GOSH I totally forgot that music was an art form. Man I suck, listen to me. Hahaha! In that case, disregard my statement. I thought the theme of the contest was strictly visual art.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

waterwish In reply to Ribbontail [2011-02-06 18:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about it~ Haha. That was the whole point of my theme. To -remind- people that there are other forms of art, aside from drawings and paintings and such. I HOPE the contest isn't strictly visual art. If it is, I'm going to kick the judges so hard for being ignorant and close-minded (After all, appreciating art is all about BEING open-minded). I would be surprised if they were focusing mostly on the visual though, considering the school also offers degrees in culinary and fashion design.
