Description A fast moving mountain creek winds through early winter after the first sub-zero nights in November 2007.

This was photographed on a mountain near Thunder Bay on the Fort William First Nations (Ojibway) reserve. A few years ago I talked with an elder and received his blessing to photograph this fantastic piece of land. It has cliffs, caves, rock-slides, rivers and lakes ...and also a vast stretch of pristine Lake Superior shoreline.

There are no trails along this creek and hardly any visitors here since it involves a 4x4 trek for 5km of rough rocky road and then a hike through the steep terrain. Navigating the icy creek-bed is a real challenge at this time of year and the dense cedar forest encroaching it leaves few other options.

But in the end it was all worthwhile because this type of cold beauty will only remain here for a week or so until the inevitable heavy snows bury it for the winter... I waited for a dull overcast day so I could shoot without a filter and capture detail without blow-outs or too much shadow... doing slow exposure work around ice and snow can be tricky.

As is my style, I've tone-mapped this image from a single RAW file. I really like the way it brought out the intricate detail in the rocks, moss, and ice and I hope you will enjoy the results also!

When I see yours HDRi I think twice about how the hell you avoid the damn noise... It's clear you don't use a De-Noiser... I'm wondering each time, more...

Neat Image ... very cool little program.. tricky to use it properly though.

Wow... I have it, but Imagenomic Noiseware I like most. I find it much more handy. However, your images show you do an excellent work with neat image. There are tons of sharpened details in your photos, something hard to get when denoising That's why I thought you didn't use some de-noiser...

Yeah... I knew about that... Also Noiseware... That's the most difficult part to handle, I believe...

Lovely! I really love the unique look of your photos. Is this "tone-mapping" kinda like HDR? Thanks

I'm not going to comment on all 4 as they will all probably say the same thing. Pure Magic! The series is jawdroppingly beautiful and for me seems like another world. Favs all round.
