Description
US bombs cruisin' overhead

There goes my love rocket red

Shoot it up
Shoot it up

Art Notes:

Okay, this may need some explanation:

1. The title is a parody of the Sigue Sigue Sputnik song, "Love Missile F1-11".

2. The F-111 was an important Cold War aircraft that got off to a very rocky start. It was only in the mid 80s-90s that it really came into its own.

3. Coincidentally, so did VGA gaming. Clever programmers could get 320 H x 240 W x 256 (colors) using VGA's undocumented Mode X.

4. Modern VR systems work best in games with a "cockpit", like a flight sim.

5. For some reason, a lot of new VR content is being made starring Hatsune Miku (the Vocaloid)

So, combine them all and you're now flying an F-111 with Hatsune Miku as your WSO in glorious 256 color VGA. With one caveat- I had to make this 640 x 480 rather than 320 x 240, which looks like a postage stamp on a modern computer, and refused to scale properly when I tried to resize it. So, VBE 2.0 it is (but just pretend it's Mode X, okay).

And if it still makes no sense, that's okay. I think.

The F-111 is such a criminally underrated plane, I loved it ever since I was a tiny kid during the days of desert storm. I went to my first airshow, around '92 and was actually able to see an active F-111 in person before they retired them. Great experience! It and the Strike Eagle are my favorite jets.

I see you're a fan of the ground attackers. By the way, did the F-111 do a fuel dump?

You got me, I really do love the ground attackers. I think fighters and air to air combat is awesome, don't get me wrong, I love a ton of fighters too but I "respect" attackers/bombers for the more pivotal role they serve in wars. Once you've maintained air superiority, which is honestly very easy for the US, its the attackers/bombers that win wars.

As for the F-111, it was a long time ago, I don't think it did a fuel dump, sadly I don't even think it flew for that show. I'm always jealous the Australians because I'll never get to see an F-111 in the air. I've had dreams about seeing one fly.

That and she's in one of the safest planes I know I'd love to be in with a situation like that.

They sit in an escape pod pretty much, so when they eject it's not their seats screaming out of the cockpit, the cockpit your in is spat out of the stricken aircraft. It's practically a escape pod once the parachutes deploy. Even has landing cushions that double as a life raft for water landings.

The F-111 is freaking sweet.

I think the main goal is to not use the ejection system in general, however.

Well yes, but at least from what I know, pod ejections have a good track record and fewer injuries have come from them. But none the less if you're punching out some bad stuff has gone down, and what's waiting down below isn't any friendlier either.

Another excellent old school style image. You did a great job with the color limitations. The whole picture has a real mood to it. I think Miku is read for some serious flight time.

Very clever! Although, I'm wondering how she was able to stuff all her hair into that helmet.

As for her hair, no worries. UnderΒ  TO Number 39-39-39 "HELMET TECHICAL ADJUSTMENTS FOR VOCALOID USERS", it specifies that the majority of the cushioning material be removed, as Vocaloid hair is sufficiently energy absorbant when bunched up.

I never got to see the Aardvarks do their thing, but I frequently enjoyed Phantoms and Corsair IIs mock dogfighting over my house growing up.

Actually, I think that by the mid-90s the USAF was retiring the F-111s. Β Their issues were something of a cautionary tale, as I worked in avionics systems development at the time. Β The Aussies flew them until just a few years ago, I think.

Love the atmosphere, as if an expectant Miku looks longingly at the pilot..."let's get this bird in the air!"

Oh, yeah. Β She'd have to have had her hair bobbed. Β There simply isn't enough real estate inside one of those helmet's for THAT much hair. Β Unless she somehow tucked it all down the back of the neck of her flight suit, which I doubt would have enough room either.

I think the F-111 was a cautionary tale from the start to the finish. Apparently making one aircraft do absolutely everything at once is a bad idea. Who knew? Well, other than everyone who said it was a bad idea.

UnderΒ  TO Number 39-39-39 "HELMET TECHICAL ADJUSTMENTS FOR VOCALOID USERS", it specifies that the majority of the cushioning material be removed, as Vocaloid hair is sufficiently energy absorbant when bunched up. Also, hammerspace.

Thanks for your comment!

How the Hell does Miku ger all her hair under the helmet? Or did she get a hair cut to comply with USAF regs?

There are more if you search, but I prefer longhair Miku. For short hair, there's always Gumi.
