The Gull is long serving design fielded by the Colonial Authorities Military assistance Command.It is a medium performance Multi role design capable of performing almost any mission required my the Colonial Marines, Maritime Services, and the Quasi Governmental Colonial Assistance Special Action And Response Group ( CASAR ) 


Before the Gull was adopted these services were forced to make due with cast off craft,, civilian combat designs, or improvised expedients for specialized missions. This resulted in a high turn over of craft, personnel and an demoralizing mission failure rate that nearly saw the dissolution of the Independent colonial Authority Fleet forcing the colonial Marines and Maritime services to depend on a military structure poorly suited to the specialized roles filled by the CA military forces. 


The Gull was the result of an unorthodox development and procurement process to avoid political complications and interference by politicians protecting a pet system or company. As an independent group outside normal military and political channels CASAR was allowed to procure and field systems not used by the regular forces. Using the CASAR procurement program as a front The Colonial Authority put out a request for a Multi role, multi environment craft capable of being easily maintained and modified for specific mission profiles.


the Sydney-Hyde corporation fielded a lightweight long range Exo-endo Atmospheric prototype with supersonic in atmospheric speeds and Near excellent performance in real and hyperspace environments. the craft was lightly armored and had Acceleration force compensation abilities slightly below the then state of the art.


The Design was beyond the companies ability to mass produce in the numbers required to fullfil the needs of the Colonial Authority so various manufacturers were given a Licences to build the craft making it widely produced on multiple planets. This coincidentally insures that difficulties, or damage to one facility will not prevent rapid production of the craft or interfere with  the delivery of new craft or spare parts.


Sydney-Hyde oversees the organization, development of new systems, and handles technical matters with the Gull and has went on to produce several designs to be franchised out to other manufacturers in return for a ( for the industry) modest royalty fee. 


The Gull has a reputation as a pilot friendly fighter. the modular design, AI assisted piloting systems and heavily armored and protected pilots capsule/cockit ensure that even in the event of catastrophic damage to the vehicle the pilot survival rate is extremely high. 


The Gull's hybrid Gravitic/thrust vectoring/aerodynamic flight controls are fairly advanced allowing the craft to execute radical off axis maneuvers usually seen n far more costly and advanced combat craft. 


Hardmounted twin guns, a single 25mm e-mag cannon, and a high rate of fire plasma tri-barrel give the pilot his choice of engagement ranged in the medium to short range bands, while a wide selection of missiles, torpedoes and unguided rockets provide long range and ground support capabilities on par with many designs fueled by the regular forces. 


a peculiar quirk of the design is that it has full maneuverability at low speeds and in gravitics only flight allowing it to hover, reverse its course and make radical lateral movements in combat at street level altitudes. Most military fighter craft use their gravitics only for attitude control maneuvering and to compensate for high gee maneuvers. 


The radical Gravitc only abilities of the craft allow it to if need be to act as a superheavy gunship, or maneuver into built up areas delivering heavy firepower with virtual immunity to small arm, shoulder fired weapons and light vehicle weapons. 


Pilots serving in ground support/gunship squadrons routinely wear full combat armor and carry a full field pack and infantry issue weapons load out in their survival kit and ( at the request of the Colonial alliance receive full infantry training, as wel as survival/evasion/residence/escape training to allow the pilot to survive in a combat area if his craft is shot down by ground fire. 



Known Issues:

the Vehicle is designed for modular systems and rapid change components however the mounts for these systems sometimes become damaged, warped by field use. making it difficult to run routine maintenance until the system racks are disassembled and repaired. 


Particulate ingestion:

despite it's extensive protection from large particulates the baffle screen system of the Gull is prone ot damage crating a hazard of ingesting large particle sof matter which can be lodged in the intakes of the thrusters or disable a key system without warning. 


Variants 

Scout

replaces weapons hardpoints for additional storage cells and sensor packages


Two seat Scout trainer

allows for more advanced electronic warfare and sensor packages to be carried and operated by a dedicated elextronics systems operator.Trainer versions substitute a duplicate set of flight controls for an instructor to sit in the rear seat of the craft.


Tanker

replaces weapons hard points with a permanently attached tankage and fueling probe systems, the copilot is supplied with a control console to guide the fueling probe into the receptacles of other craft and manage fuel loading systems. a tanker version is totally unarmed due to the fact it's extra tankage and boon systems make the craft to heavy to engage in air to air combat,


Ground attack Gunship: 

in addition to greatly improved armor and pilot protection plates. the Attack Gunship fits a heavy 35mm E-nag cannon in a mobile mount under the nose of the craft as well as enhanced optic in nose mounted turret.  fitted for laser designation and attack drone coordination duties as well as mounting heavy bomb/guided munitions mounts under the wing. 


While the vehicle mounts modern static barriers and pilot isolation systems it does tend to allow leakage into the cockpit are when operating in Hyperspace. the dust and gases sometimes  become so heavy the pilot has difficulty seeing his controls and fouls the holographic projection system that creates the enhanced displays on the canopy. 


Landing gear damage:

The landing gear of the Gull is simple and robust but the lack of an armored door over the system makes it prone to combat damage or collision damage rendering it unusable. experienced pilots can manage to land without landing gear but the pilot must insure the system is functional before landing or risk a sudden loss of integrity on landing. 


Limited inter communication ability:

the Gull is not intended or equipped to operate in conjunction with Fleet combat craft making it difficult for Gull pilots to fully access the information network of Fleet capital ship or coordinate maneuvers with Fleet combat craft. ( issue being addressed at present)

It's not an original Idea I admit. but it seemed logical that carrier based aircraft operating in advanced areas might need to bring their own refueling craft along with them...and a Big lumbering Tanker in a combat area seems like a bad idea

very  nice overall design I have to ask what do you think about trying to make at least a alien gravity vehicle nothing to wild like flying but can hover with ease.
